Learning How to Learn at the Collegiate Level
A college education is vital since it helps students shape their lives. Many learners who concentrate on their academic activities gain important knowledge and skills that enable them to be competitive in the job market. Learning how to learn at the collegiate level is a significant topic that can help identify various challenges that students encounter in colleges and that hinder their scholarly success. These problems can be solved by implementing proper strategies. College education determines students’ success in life after graduation. Learners who are keen at school obtain crucial lessons that they apply in the real world. In addition, the topic can help educators know the best strategies for imparting knowledge and skills to students effectively. For example, lecturers can combine various learning styles, including auditory, kinesthetic, and visual, to ensure that students understand various concepts taught in lecture rooms. Besides, different learners prefer distinct learning styles for them to comprehend things they are taught in colleges. Learning how to learn at the collegiate level is crucial since it shapes students’ lives after school.
The two primary problems that hinder effective learning at college are interpersonal conflicts and miscommunication. “Conflict and miscommunication can have detrimental effects on decision-making” (Vandergoot, Sarris, Kirby, & Ward, 2018). For instance, I remember how the lack of effective communication and conflicts among team members adversely affected group activities in high school. The group leader did not pass the right information to members timely. As such, some duties were not carried out on time, resulting in decreased productivity and the lack of duty completion. In addition, due to cultural differences, some workers had conflicts, and the leader who was supposed to help address these issues was not concerned. In that light, it was challenging for team members from distinctive cultures to work together harmoniously. For students to obtain knowledge and skills, they should learn how to resolve conflicts and communicate well among themselves to avoid irrational decision-making. In reality, colleges comprise students from different places, cultures, ethnic backgrounds, and religions. They should promote multicultural diversity and help students understand others’ cultures to avoid possible conflicts. As such, effective learning at the collegiate level cannot occur when there are conflicts and miscommunication.
Learning cannot take place without the effective collaboration of students and educators. Educators should help learners adopt effective learning strategies, such as rereading, practice testing, forming mental images, and distributed practice. “Students in a large introductory psychology class completed a ‘learning how to learn’ assignment in which they read one of four randomly assigned empirical articles about the utility of a learning strategy (i.e. distributed practice, rereading, practice testing, or forming mental images) and wrote a paper summarizing, analyzing, and applying the article’s findings” (Brown-Kramer, 2020). Learners who applied the concepts learned in this assignment outperformed their peers studying the same course. On that note, educators should know that learners obtain knowledge and skills distinctively. For example, some students comprehend materials with visuals, such as graphs and pictures, while others like listening to content being read to them. Professors and instructors should incorporate all strategies that might help learners gain more knowledge. They are responsible for ensuring that students meet learning objectives. For example, I understand concepts better if explanations accompany diagrams or figures. Whenever I have a class that requires me to read content without visuals, it becomes challenging to figure out specific concepts. Consequently, educators can inspire and motivate students to learn based on the learning strategies they incorporate into the curriculum.
College students should research topics, variables, or concepts that are challenging to understand on the Internet. Educators should not provide answers to all questions they give to students. In some cases, students should be left to search for answers or solve problems by themselves. That way, they can utilize the web or engage in discussions with other learners to get appropriate solutions. By doing so, learners obtain knowledge and skills. “Student learning motivation needs to be raised again by exciting their curiosity, for example not only by reading repetitive and verbal but using the appropriate and interesting teaching aids while challenging questions to improve their thinking ability” (Bhakti & Astuti, 2018). That is why students shou...
