Abstract
It is believed that if one does everything they are expected to; following the proper system; with the right to do list, and time plan, then time management is effectively practiced. Time management involves people from all walks of life: students and workers. However, the world now has a huge network of continuous stream of information, communication and accessibility that keeps people on their feet every day and night. The workload is increasing with businesses reaching up to the global market. This means that the clients are now international in whichever kind of business one is involved in, and this makes everyone busy. Despite huge profits and high production, business will still struggle even in such a positive environment due to how the workers manage their time. Poor time management would result to delays, losses, stress in workers and poor job performance. Time needs to be managed effectively so that deadlines are reached. Therefore, there is need for effective time management for employees and managers. This will involve effective time management techniques that will ensure job performance and job satisfaction. The issues that will be looked at in this research paper will be on time management. For decades, scholarly authors have published various issues of time management, each having their own opinion about the whole topic. This research paper will discuss the issues of time management; mistakes, the outcomes of poor time management, and the solutions and techniques that can be used to ensure proper time management.
Introduction
Time management issues are very common in people; people are very diverse. This has brought about literature with an exceptionally large market for self-help and organizational books on time management (Bregman, 2013).The work environment is growing and expanding to a global platform and this calls for competition in communication and the market for products and services. Employees would need to stick to deadlines and be able to deal with the growing workload and production systems (Häfner & Stock, 2010). Time management then becomes very difficult for many people (Thomack et al, 2012).
The problems of time management include procrastination, multitasking, working without taking breaks, and poor time planning. All these lead to stress and strain at workplaces, poor job performance and job satisfaction, time pressure and a fast pace of life (Häfner & Stock,2010; Christopher et al, 2010). Managing time involves setting a goal, developing a plan and measuring the outcome. It also involves having an organizational system that will enable one not waste time. The set of principles, balance, overall purpose that is focused on time management will be looked at in the research paper (Thomack et al, 2012).
Time management
Time management involves using the time available to accomplish tasks at the expected time frame (Thomack et al, 2012). Time management according to Häfner & Stock (2010) is seen as behaviours whose main goal is realizing the efficacy of time use while conducting goal-oriented tasks.
People that are poor time managers usually waste their time and resources and are much disorganized. Thomack et al (2012) explain that these people jumble up from one task to another without purpose and they do not set priorities. The authors add that such people never say no, but handle a single task at a time. They are also very distracted and they would react to the “hottest” tasks of the instant. Lastly, they do not have any plans for their time management.
The impacts of poor time management according to Häfner & Stock (2010) indicate tension at work, unhappiness, job strain, least pleasure from work and health related issues like stress, emotional distress, cases of worry in students and workers, and emotional exhaustion of workers.
Temporal dimension of work
It is important to note the temporal dimension of work when it comes to time management. Employees` competence in time management and their personality traits influence temporal dimensions. They include; avoiding procrastination; punctuality; prioritization of tasks; precise provision of time; adhering to calendars; meeting targets; harmonization; autonomy in the use of time and coordination(Christopher et al, 2010).
When organizations seek to achieve temporal objectives, traditionally, they would employ employees that have personality traits related to time management, since they would seek for time urgency in their checklist of recruits. In addition, organizations have put their time and money in time management training so that their employees are knowledgeable on time management techniques, and they gain time management skills and practices in the work they perform (Christopher et al, 2010;Bregman, 2013).
The job temporal demands would lead to organization selecting their employees with concepts of time congruity and job temporal characteristics and demand. Jobs differ in their temporal characteristics and demands, for instance, a bus driver would require punctuality and a researcher would require planning (Christopher et al, 2010).Whereas, other jobs would require neither.
A job that has high time demands will demand for employees having time management skills and personal characteristics to achieve the temporal demand of the job. Sometimes this may not be the case even after some employees receive training on time management. This is due to the fact that the organizational atmosphere is not supportive and facilitating and therefore, the employees have a hard time applying techniques and practices taught.
