In the past, Hershey has taken a back seat when it comes to cocoa farming and has only been a buyer of cocoa. Cocoa farming in the world happens in the Western part of Africa, Latin America, and Asia. However, the largest producers of cocoa in the world are Ghana and Ivory Coast which account for more than 60% of the world’s cocoa. However, these countries have been accused, and rightly so, of child labor and corruption because of cocoa farming. Well, being one of the largest buyers of cocoa in the world, Hershey needs to act concerned and invest in these countries. To-date, farmers in Ghana and Ivory Coast do their farming in small farms and use outdated methods and tools to farm. However, with its reach and deep financial might, Hershey can invest in these farmers and see to it that it gets 100% sustainable cocoa.
