Hotel Katrina was a major disaster and one that, brought a new face to the disaster preparedness of the United States. There were quite a number of aspects that did not go as planned and ones that brought about an awakening to state and federal organs on disaster preparedness. The disaster that took place on 29th august 2005, tricking the Gulf coast of the United States brought about a lot of blame game with local, state and federal officials pointing fingers in a politically fueled storm. Without considering the political angles of the day, there were quite a number failures that were the cause factor leading to the devastation of the disaster. One of the main causes was the levee system, which led to the destruction and death that too k place in New Orleans (Zimmermann, 2015). The floods that were experienced in the area were largely attributed to the levee system failures. At the time the disaster struck, the levee system was not complete. According to the investigations that followed the disaster, there was a strong indication pointing to the fact that the design of the levee system was also part of the contributing factor. Due to the design and the construction flaws, the levee system breached in a number areas allowing the floods to reach further inland. Along with the slow response, the disaster devastated most parts of New Orleans. Some of the basic elements that could have helped improve the situation, is that there is need to establish National Operations Center which not only provide situational awareness but also coordinate all efforts associated with response (Zimmermann, 2015).
