People Up with Big Data
Big data analytics is critical for businesses because it can differentiate them from other businesses and increase their general revenue. Global companies such as Twitter, Walmart, and LinkedIn are adopting big data analytics for better performance. Big data analysis helps organizations and companies to create products based on customer preferences and needs (Rajaraman, 2016). These aspects of the business help to increase its revenue and profit margins. Big data analytics in companies increases revenue by a 5-20% margin. With most sectors adopting big data technologies, the education sector is gradually warming up to using big data analytics. Big data can be applied in various fields in education management, such as decision-making (Vassakis et al., 2018). The technology will improve educational policies quality on different levels with teachers being able to identify specific students learning needs, making it easier to offer personalized teaching, enrollment management, teaching and research management, and employee management decisions.
In addition, big data analytics can be applied in managing teaching operations. The technology can be incorporated into course learning management, professional recommendation, and curriculum management. Moreover, big data analytics promotes the transformation of teaching assessment styles to accurate and quantitative evaluation from the normal macro evaluation, thus diversifying and conscientization of evaluation in education systems (Attaran et al., 2018). The previous study identified that students in self-learning under a big data environment are more likely to achieve efficiency in studying through practical ability. Furthermore, the technology can be applied to manage students’ autonomous learning. Big data platforms, including MOOCs and study management systems, can collect and store large amounts of data on human-computer interaction, performance information, learning behavior information, and individual information (Špakov et al., 2019). Also, it can provide an interactive stage where students review areas of improvement to promote self-growth and learning.
People Up educational institution in Singapore aims to incorporate big data analytics in its processes to maximize its revenues and minimize its expenditure. The institution aims to utilize three main types of big data to achieve its goals; movement tracker, AWS cloud computing, and flight intelligence system. Movement trackers have been readily adopted in the modern educational system to aid in identifying the special requirement of students by teachers. It enables tutors to differentiate between quick and slow learners and thus efficiently utilize resources to the advantage of low achievers (MoravΔík et al., 2017). By incorporating this type of big data in its system, the People Up Institution will be able to minimize expenses on students who require less attention from tutors and concentrate their investment on other students who require more attention. The institution will also increase its revenues through parents paying more for their kids to be monitored and given specialized treatment. People Up has introduced a wearable device mandatory rental system for every child. It increases the efficiency and safety of the kids in all activities. Movement trackers will increase the institution’s revenue from $36.3B to $114.4B.
In addition, the institution will adopt the AWS cloud computing technology that will minimize its expenses for maintaining data centers and increase the speed and agility the institution carries out its activities, such as evaluating students and providing results. Moreover, the institution will benefit from massive economies of scale by achieving lower variable costs and pay-as-you-go prices. The institution aims to reduce its expenses by 21% by incorporating AWS cloud computing. The technology will generally help save money and increase the security of user data information. It also makes accessing information from any place (Jaleel, 2018). Flight Intelligence systems are incorporated to provide personalized recommendations to customers on the best airlines, travel times, and seats. This helps the customer choose the best airline based on their needs, resulting in cost-saving for airlines and generally increased revenues (Santoso et al., 2017). Moreover, they lead to proactive customer satisfaction. Incorporating big data- Flight intelligence systems to businesses helps airlines reduce overall marketing costs by 10-20%.
Challenges
The institution faces various challenges by incorporating the three big data technologies; movement tracker, AWS cloud computing, and flight intelligence system. For movement trackers, the machine is limited against its original function if the institution fails to maintain, upgrade or refresh the system regularly. This reduces the efficiency and effectiveness of the system within the institution leading to less revenue. Failure to regularly maintain the system also increases the maintenance costs increasing the public institution expenditure. Incorporating the big data in a large institution such as People Up will be capital intensive as each student must have a wearable device to make it easier to monitor their progress (Hariri et al., 2019). The devices are quite expensive and may pose a challenge to implementing the technology in the institution. Moreover, by tracking students, there will be two classes; low –track and upper–track. The low-track classes will comprise the minority, low achievement, learning, and income students leading to them falling further behind compared to students in upper-track classes.
