Skimming a Research Paper

Research Paper Instructions:

This assignment lets you practice the skill of skimming a research paper to condense it into the most relevant facts.

Use the search engine Google Scholar to find a research paper describing an experiment.

use this research paper

Grahn, J. A., & Brett, M. (2007). Rhythm and beat perception in motor areas of the brain. Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience, 19(5)

In a one page report, list the following:

• full citation in APA format

• research question (What did the researchers want to know?)

• hypothesis (What did they think they would find?)

• method (What tool did they use?)

• stimulus (What sound was presented?)

• independent variable(s) (What did they control for?)

• dependent variable(s) (What did they measure?)

• result (What did they find?)

• conclusion (Now that we have this finding, what does it imply?)

The point is to keep your answers brief and accurate as shown in the two examples uploaded here.

Research Question

Do specific motor regions respond to the beat in rhythm, and what temporal properties of rhythms are critical for spontaneous beat perception to occur?

Hypothesis

The researchers hypothesized that the basal ganglia and supplementary motor area (SMA) would respond in the presence of a regular beat. They also hypothesized that the basal ganglia and SMAs are the most likely candidate areas for the detection or generation of an internal beat, given their involvement in temporal sequencing and internally generated movements.

Method Two experiments were conducted: a reproduction experiment and a functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) study.
