Music has been a fundamental part of human culture, and choral music has played a significant role in shaping societies around the world (Daykin et al., 2018). In recent years, community choirs have gained popularity in many regions, including Shenzhen, China, as a means of promoting social connections, personal growth, and cultural diversity (Varner, 2019). However, little research has assessed the factors that influence young adults' participation in community choirs, particularly the role of family and peer support. This study examines the influence of cultural background on the Shenzhen young adult’s participation in community choirs and its potential impact on their social, emotional, and academic development. The study is expected to shed light on the factors that motivate young adults to participate in community choirs and to provide insights that may help promote community engagement and well-being.
The theoretical framework of the study will involve two concepts. The first one is the "Social Learning Theory," which suggests that individuals learn behaviors and attitudes from observing and interacting with others, including family members and peers (Akers and Jennings, 2015). In the context of this study, social learning theory could explain how cultural background can influence young adult’s engagement in community choirs (Lindl, 2018). Another idea is the "Self-Determination Theory," which posits that people are inspired to participate in events that help them accomplish their basic psychological needs for relatedness, competence, and autonomy (Adams et al., 2017). The theory could help to clarify why some young adults are more motivated to participate in community choirs than others.
Background to the Research
Community choirs have become increasingly popular in many parts of the world as a way to promote social connections, personal growth, and cultural diversity (Collective, 2020). These choirs bring together people of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels to sing and perform in supportive and collaborative settings (Lamont et al., 2018). In Shenzhen, China, community choirs have gained significant attention and have become an important part of the cultural scene (Zhou and Yang, 2021). However, there is limited research on the factors that influence Shenzhen young adult’s participation in community choirs, specifically the role of cultural background (Gao et al., 2021).
Shenzhen is a modern metropolis in China that is home to a diverse population with varied cultural backgrounds. Community choirs are a popular activity among young adults in Shenzhen, but there may be cultural factors that influence their level of participation and engagement. Cultural differences can impact individuals' attitudes towards music, their motivation to participate, and their social interactions within the choir setting. Understanding the influence of cultural background on Shenzhen young adults' participation in community choirs is important for promoting cultural inclusivity and encouraging greater participation in community activities. This research aims to investigate the relationship between cultural background and participation in community choirs among young adults in Shenzhen, with the objective of identifying the factors that influence their involvement and engagement in this activity.
Research has shown that cultural background is critical factors in promoting young adults’ engagement in community activities (Goldstein et al., 2021). Positive social relationships and family support are important predictors of young adults’ involvement in extracurricular activities, including music and the arts (O'Flaherty et al., 2022). Peer support has also been shown to be a significant predictor of young adults’ engagement in community activities, with peer influence being particularly strong during adolescence (Giménez-Llort, 2022).
Given the potential benefits of community choirs for young adults’ development and well-being, it is critical to comprehend the factors that influence their participation, including the role of cultural background (Dingle et al., 2019). This research purposes to contribute to the current literature on social support in young adults’ engagement’s role in community activities, with a focus on the unique context of Shenzhen and its young adults’ population (Ye et al., 2017). Through this study, the researcher hopes to gain insights that can inform efforts to promote community engagement and well-being among the Shenzhen young adults.
Research Gap
Despite the growing popularity of community choirs in Shenzhen, China, and their potential benefits for young adults’ development and well-being, there is a lack of research on factors that influence Shenzhen young adult’s participation in community choirs, particularly the role of cultural background. While research has shown that cultural background is important predictors of young adults engagement in community activities, including music and the arts (Jiang, 2021), there are limited studies that specifically examine the influence of these factors on Shenzhen young adult’s participation in community choirs.
To address this study gap, the research aims to explore the influence of cultural background on Shenzhen young adult’s participation in community choirs and its potential impact on their social, emotional, and academic development. By examining social support’s role in young adults’ engagement in community choirs, this study aims to contribute to the existing literature on young adults’ engagement in community activities and provide insights that can inform efforts to promote community engagement and well-being among Shenzhen young adults (Majee and Anakwe, 2020).

This knowledge could inform the development of strategies to increase cultural background for young adults’ engagement in community choirs. Rossi et al. (2016) confirm the significance of community music and other social activities as the leading factors to positive outcomes for emotional and academic development among young adults.
