Becky Chamber’s closed and common orbit outlines the story of Sidra as artificial intelligence. She transforms herself into an android body and in turn, leaves the starship in order to have an independent existence in Pepper’s company. The story of Pepper is that of a genetically modified child. Throughout the narrative, Pepper, Tak, and Blue help her to adjust to the new life as the novel teaches an important lesson about parenting and friendship.
Sidra does not have a memory of her past life and, therefore, has a difficulty in living in the body kit. She is bothered to be unable to carry out normal life activities like her friends. Sidra is in the process of negotiating with the universe and discovering her new body, a task which she finds to be challenging.
Pepper, Tak, and Blue play a substantial role in helping Sidra adapt to the new environment. The AI modifications done on Sidra creates tension regarding how other people would perceive her personhood. “All the things made better for some people. Nobody has ever figured out how to make things better for everybody” (Chambers, 2018). Sidra has been transformed into a beneficial AI but, she does have difficulties understanding her new form. Pepper, Blue, and Tak have not been modified in a similar way as to that of Sidra. Therefore, they are able to understand the universe better and help Sidra understand her personhood.
