Russel Foster's TedTalk: Why Do We Sleep
Participate in a health-related presentation, Insta live stream, listen to a speaker, local event, health movie, podcast, or something that supports learning about your health. Write 300 words about the experience and read at least one post from another class member. There are many events going on all over the Bay Area, some derived from ancient healing traditions, others from creative arts, modern research, and our own family cultures. Sleep is one of the most essential yet taken-for-granted processes that we do in our lives. In the TedTalk video by Russell Foster entitled Why do We Sleep, he noted that for anyone who lives up to the age of 90 years old, about 32 years of his time would be spent sleeping. This sheer amount of time strongly suggests how crucial sleep is for us humans. Specifically, Russell noted that while Neuroscientists and Neuropsychologists debate over the real function of sleep in our lives, the most possible reasons as to why we need to sleep are; (1) Brain function, (2) Energy Conservation, and (3) Restoration.
Scientists debate whether sleep helps boost any or all of these functions that we need in our waking hours. Interestingly, Russel noted that while recent advancements in neurosciences have provided a theoretical foundation for these theories, such beliefs existed even during ancient civilizations.
