Question 1
Tourism can have both positive and negative economic impacts. The Maasai people benefit from tourists in various economic ways. For example, since park entry tariffs at Serengeti are low, users can conserve the environment and assist in sustaining the optimal mix between wildlife and livestock. The Maasai people benefit from the revenue that contributes to the nation's development. Serengeti National Park contributed to approximately $22.4 million in 2009/10 calendar year (Kibira, 2021). Furthermore, these revenues facilitate management operations, recruitment of staff, and good infrastructure. Additionally, direct economic remunerations are obtained from the Serengeti National Park (SENAPA) Revenue Sharing Programme, which offers a potion of park fees through the support of various projects initiated in the community.
The money is significantly flowing in and out of the region. For example, the money flows in through the fees the visitors pay for different services and bookings. Alternatively, money flows out when the national government collects different permits, fees, and taxes from various activities at the Serengeti National Park. The people from this area benefit from the resources they collect due to tourism-related activities. The locals also benefit since tourism has created employment opportunities where job positions include cooks, reception employees, managers, guides, sales clerks, and drivers. Regarding the bills, national and local governments play a crucial role in funding infrastructural development, social services, and environmental conservation, which is integral to the locals and the overall tourism industry in the country. The non-governmental organizations fund various projects to foster sustainable tourism and community growth in the Maasai region. Unfortunately, the wealth generated had unbearable effects since it has led to land disputes and displacements. Tourism conservation and infrastructure have reduced the Maasai individuals' access to natural resources and land.
Question 2
Tourism has had substantial impacts on the Maasai people. For instance, these people have been ignored while making essential decisions related to development. Besides, tourism has not been more beneficial than economic benefits. For example, several Maasai projects have been initiated without their consent but have yet to benefit from massive community cooperation and knowledge. Tourism has also failed to diversify in areas apart from wildlife, such as beach tourism and culture. Even though Tanzania is encouraged to restore cultural tourism, it is essential to understand that it may come with sex tourism.
On the other hand, establishing national parks means exclusions of the existing residents and restricting resources used for people staying near the park boundaries. Numerous Maasai who settled and grazed their livestock on the Serengeti were moved away to Ngorongoro Crater Areas, which have been awarded little restrictive conservation status (McCrummen, 2024). On the other side, tourism has caused land grabbing. Usually, the delivery of services in secondary and primary schools is poor. Overall, wider effects have impacted the social capital component, such as reinforcing social norms and solidifying community bonding networks.
Usually, there have been notable measures to resettle. The government incorporates such measures to address various negative impacts of tourism on the Maasai community. Such measures comprise offering alternative ways of raising revenues and education. Nonetheless, these measures might be insufficient as some Maasai individuals may resist resettling due to their connection with their ancestral land. Therefore, it is vital to approach the resettlement process about the Maasai's way of life. Upholding their cultural identity and tradition would ensure they have a say in issues that impact their livelihoods.
Question 3
Tourism has had various environmental impacts on the Serengeti region. Notably, excess consumption of water, poor waste disposal, and habitat destruction during construction are great environmental impacts from hotels as a result of tourism. The harshness of these impacts relies on how the infrastructure is developed and the levels of tourism activities. As a result, this relies on the government regulation put in ...
