Course Reflection: Forum 5 – Mental Illness Discussion
Introduction
This course has been one of the most significant moments, as partaking in Forum 5 on mental illness. During this discussion, I have critically analyzed the reasons behind the stigmatization of mentally ill individuals, manifestations of discrimination in real life, and other ways of transforming this. This assignment challenged me to not only think about how society perceives it but also how I personally perceive mental health. It also assisted me in reinforcing my academic abilities- most particularly research, synthesis, and critical thinking.
Origins and Consequences of Stigma
By participating in the forum, I was able to appreciate the complexity and the deep-rooted nature of stigma. Stigma is not merely the negative attitudes, according to a recent scoping study. It is a cycle of destructive behaviors that restrict access to health services, work, and social inclusion. They demonstrate the role and contribution of stigma (bias) and discrimination (action) towards severe negative outcomes in multiple spheres of life.
I also understood that stigma does not exist in all cultures. Individuals with mental health issues mentioned that stigmatization can be caused by cultural beliefs, such as that known mental illness is a disease of the family, or even by excessive optimism about the seriousness of the disease. Due to such beliefs, the social networks of the mentally ill are reduced, the economic survival is endangered, and the mental health is hit even worse. I found this to be very relevant to me since it showed the influence of both the societal setup and the cultural ideas that are deeply rooted and contribute to the advers...
