Reinforcement in Behaviorism
In chapter one, I found the concept of reinforcement thought-provoking. In particular, reinforcement refers to the stimulus that follows a particular response and increases the frequency of that response (Rathus 13). According to Burrhus Frederic Skinner, learned behaviors are reinforced. In other words, people are likely to achieve the desired behavior if they are rewarded when they engage in respective actions.
Reinforcement might be negative or positive. For instance, positive reinforcement entails adding something to increase the frequency of a specific behavior. On the contrary, removing something to promote a behavior is known as negative reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is used at the workplace to make individuals happy and appreciated, which can be rewarding and motivating (Susanto et al. 2). That way, a company is likely to increase creativity, production, and job satisfaction.
Susanto et al.’s article shows the importance of positive reinforcement as a primary factor that can be used to promote employee performance. When workers are praised for good performance, they become happier and more productive.
