Introduction
The Covid-19 pandemic caught businesses by surprise and continues to spread, disrupting global supply chains, business practices, and workplace norms. In order to achieve recovery and sustainable growth amid the crisis, organizations must design and implement proactive leadership and management approaches. As workplace norms change with each generation, business leaders must reconsider their leadership behaviors, methodologies, and traits. This paper evaluates the appropriate management styles for the Millennials, the need to adjust management approaches to meet the changing work arrangement due to Covid-19 disruptions, and the anticipated work norms due to the crisis. It also evaluates the three most outstanding business leaders regarding their habits, traits, and methodologies.
Question 1A: Management styles for millennials
The four basic management styles include Persuasive (Charismatic Management), Autocratic (Coercive Management), Laissez-faire (Delegative Management), and Democratic (Participative Style of Management). In this vein, millennials (Generation Y) are a selection of the cohort who existed there before the 21st century. Researchers suggest their distinct workplace characteristics demand specific management styles. In order to adopt the best-fit management style for millennials, it is vital to understand some aspects befitting this group. This generation is tech-savvy and deemed highly educated, technically wise, informed, and firm believers in individual development. They could also be socially active, self-reliant, team-oriented, and independent. They have an endless desire to seek skill development while maintaining work-life balance (Sarwono and Bernarto 736). They are flexible and desire personal and professional growth, continuous learning, and satisfaction at work. They can effectively multitask due to their proactive abilities. Therefore, managers should incorporate these elements in adopting necessary management styles for millennials.
The first management style best fits this group is the delegative management style. The managers in this context allow the employees to provide input in the decision-making process. Communication is in both ways, and team cohesiveness is enhanced. Millennials operate better in cohesive teams, giving rise to informed opinions and thoughts. Even though the managers are the final decision-makers, they must consider the information the millennial member teams laid out. In this vein, the style is effective since it promotes positive bonds for professional and personal growth, ideas and management opinions are provided by the teams, and innovation in problem-solving is encouraged. The other style is participative management, where managers and employees actively make decisions. The staff gets more access to the organization’s information and provides innovative solutions (Sarwono and Bernarto 736). Employees, therefore, feel a connection and value in contributing to personal and company success. Therefore, to adjust the management styles for millennials, managers should consider the hunger for professional growth in this particular generation.
Question 1B: Combination of remote and in-person
As business organizations resume their usual mode of operations, organizational leaders are finding challenges regarding how to merge remote work and work-from-office models. It should be noted that employees have been working remotely since the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, which makes it challenging for them to embrace in-person supervision, which characterizes the traditional working approach. Research from various reports suggests that even after the conclusion of the pandemic, many organizations would prefer to allow their employees to work remotely (Best 286). Conversely, a hybrid work scheme includes a combination of in-office and remote work in the staff schedule. People frequently refer to the hybrid model, but organizations face different challenges. With the COVID-19 prevalence, a lot of the workforce was to transit rapidly to being virtual to flatten the curve (Best 286). While most potent organizations had most of the crucial technology platforms, infrastructure, and components, only a minimum understood the psychological perspective implications.
Accordingly, leaders should also ensure that the human side transits when they encourage transitioning to work remotely. There are several ways to adapt to this new management style. The first is putting trust as the primary component of everyday organizational effectiveness. This is necessary since it is hard to set mandatory working hours in a remote-based workplace. Trust helps deal with these unique challenges and circumstances. The second way is for managers to work with teams on specific schedules and protocols since no single system works effectively for all individual units. The third aspect is accessibility, even though not visible. This helps quickly solve issues and clarify instructions (Nuwer 40). The fourth way is holding regular meetings through virtual platforms such as Zoom when giving direct reports. This makes the managers give reasonable expectations and engage teams on accountable practices. Finally, managers should strive to make stressful circumstances more fun.
Question 2 Response
COVID-19 increased an outstanding human and humanitarian problem. Numerous companies around the globe advanced to the occasion, acting hastily to safeguard personnel and transform into a brand-new operating style that the complete business-continuity programs never envisioned. Across corporations, managers incorporate training from large-scale setups and domestic tests in the accomplishment reimagination. This is vital to access the positions to be played by the workplaces using formidable and innovative practices. After the pandemic, attitudes at the workplace changed rapidly. Corporations competed aggressively for high workplace sectors in essential metropolitan facilities and most centered on concerns reputable to sell collaboration. In this vein, researchers claim that before the coronavirus outbreak, the traditional understanding of the workplace made ways of life, productiveness, and triumphing to skirmish for skills the most vital elements. According to commentators, more than 50% of Americans worked remotely during the 2020 crisis, compared to approximately 25% of Americans who worked from home the previous year (Best 287). People were amazed by how hastily and precisely videoconferencing innovation, and numerous styles of virtual participation had been espoused.
According to a recent survey by McKinsey & Company, almost every worker would choose to work flexibly when presented with this offer. The survey outcome indicated that not only is working remotely and flexibly popular, with 80 million Americans taking part in it, but many also wanted to work remotely for a great part of the week when presented with the opportunity. As seen in exhibit 1, 87% of workers that provided some form of remote work embraced the chance and opportunity to spend three days on average working from home (McKinsey & Company). Most personnel liberated from long journeys and tiresome commutes observed extra-efficient strategies to utilize that time, such as balancing their social and professional lives and learning to stay and work from home (Bourgeault et al., 5-6). However, just because many workers preferred working from home to their offices, it does not imply that all companies would allow their employees to. Even amongst the sectors well-suited to operate online, there is a difference between who can be allowed to provide their services remotely. For example, the law and finance sectors, whose employees are less likely to work remotely despite the high probability that their operations could be done remotely, require their staff to return t...
