The Geostorm Film Analysis
Dean Devlin's Geostorm is a disaster movie set in the near future. It tells the story of a satellite system designed to prevent natural disasters from happening that go rogue and cause harm instead. The directors use various literary devices which propel the narration. The paper will focus on analyzing this movie based on these literary devices.
The director uses the character of Jake Lawson to show that arrogance is not always a bad thing but can result in positive results. Jake is presented as an arrogant engineer who has just gone through a divorce and is trying to find a way to rekindle his career. The character of Jake is used as a tool by the directors to show that arrogant people can make positive contributions in their field of expertise. He does this by fixing the Geostorm system after it goes rogue and causes harm. The directors also use the character of Max Lawson, Jake's brother, as a tool to show that arrogance can be used for positive results, but at the same time, it can be a negative trait. This is shown when Max does not listen to his brother and tries to fix the Geostorm system by himself, only for things to go wrong. The directors also use the character of Jake to show that it is not always bad to be arrogant. They portray him as a man who knows his worth and has the skill set to back up his confidence. He can fix the system despite not getting all the support he needs.
One of the iconic features of the movie is the choice of characters. Geostorm is an action-packed science-fiction disaster film about a satellite system that can control the weather. It stars Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, and Alexandra Maria Lara. The movie begins with Jake Lawson working at a satellite company called World Space Center. He has been working on controlling the weather through satellites for years. His boss refuses to let him finish testing it because he fears they will be responsible for millions of deaths if something goes wrong. Through the various characters, the director has shown the concept of fear and how it controls people's actions. There are many times that Jake is told to stop working on the system because he will be responsible for millions of deaths if something goes wrong. His boss and his brother, Max, try to convince him that this system is not ready yet, but he continues anyway (Nielsen et al.). Fear can paralyze people from doing anything. The movie is full of suspense and action from start to finish. Many subplots in the film keep it interesting. Jake is afraid of being responsible for millions of deaths, so he decides to take matters into his own hands and test the system on a small scale first. Soon after, the weather starts changing drastically worldwide, and the film introduces other characters dealing with the same problem in their respective countries.
The film is an allegory to modern-day climatic change practices. It shows the extreme impact of climate change on the environment and human life. For instance, the film depicts the world experiencing severe natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. The movie shows the devastating effects of these disasters on human lives and property. It also shows how people struggle to survive in these situations. The movie begins with an earthquake that destroys a large part of Indon...
