The Last Dive – A Triumph Over Turbulence

Other (Not Listed) Instructions:

Instruction:

Heavily revise and complete your short story or poetry collection. (This cannot be the same exact draft that you submitted for Workshop 4, and do not just do surface-level edits!)

Your final draft should be at least 6 full pages, but no more than 20 pages. (This length minimum is counted before you include the heading, title, etc.)

Fiction writers: double space your short story.

Grading

The “final” draft of your creative work is worth 50 points. Your grade will be determined by how well you follow through on the requirements described above, but please use the rubric attached to this page for more details.

When it comes to the “final” draft of your story or poetry collection, as the syllabus states, I will not grade you based on my personal creative preferences or whether I liked your work on a personal level (or you as a person). Instead, I’ll look for strong evidence that you’ve actively engaged in the development of your story/poems. This evidence will include revisions of elements of craft in your work, the general sense I get that you’ve applied your knowledge of writing craft to make careful, deliberate choices in your work, and how much your work has progressed toward a completed draft. The contents of your reflective essay may also influence how I grade your creative work, since that essay will also show me evidence of the above criteria.

I think it require heavily revision on the draft that I previously wrote. My professor do not set the exact requirement of the "heavily revision." So can you help me do the heavily revision on my draft and add some content related to the story if it is possible. Thank You!

The Last Dive ~ A Triumph over Turbulence
Life at school had been a relentless storm for me. The responsibilities were as endless as they were demanding, threatening to consume me in their torrent. Assignments piled up like ominous clouds on the horizon, group projects swirled around like gusts of wind, and tests loomed like thunderheads ready to strike. Amid this academic tempest, I was not only a student but also a passionate participant in extracurricular pursuits. My voice was heard in the school's debate team, my contributions shaping the flow of discourse in weekly meetings and upcoming tournaments. I also lent my hands and heart to a local animal shelter on the weekends, a cause that resonated with my deep love for animals but further intensified my whirlwind schedule. The pressure, at times, was as stifling as a tropical cyclone, leaving me gasping for breath, questioning my ability to weather the storm. Yet, I managed to navigate through this tumult, using every ounce of my resilience, organization skills, and sheer perseverance. Despite the struggle, a sense of profound satisfaction washed over me as I realized I had braved the tempest and emerged victorious. I knew there was a reward awaiting me at the end of this grueling journey.
The day of my much-anticipated reward dawned bright and promising, marking the end of a demanding summer. Today, I was to realize a dream that had been simmering within me - a plunge into the captivating abyss of the deep blue sea. My affinity for water was as innate as a fish's; swimming was not just a skill but an escape, a dance, a joy. Childhood memories were drenched in the salty spray of the ocean and the cool embrace of the local pool. The beach and the pool weren't mere places, but playgrounds where my friends and I would frolic and explore. The spark that ignited my interest in diving, however, was kindled during a family vacation to an exotic island paradise. It was here that we embarked on a snorkeling adventure, immersing ourselves in the mesmerizing tableau of the coral reefs. The underwater spectacle was as breathtaking as it was enlightening. The kaleidoscope of tropical fish, the graceful dance of sea turtles, and even the distant, seemingly peaceful sharks broke the surface of my preconceived notions. I realized the underwater world was not a realm of danger, but one of harmony and beauty. This revelation transformed my perspective and fueled my desire to delve deeper into the mysteries of the ocean. The seed of this underwater adventure was sown, and I yearned to watch it bloom.
My parents, influenced by stories of diving mishaps and accidents, were initially hesitant to let me plunge into such an adventure. Their worries echoed in my ears as I pestered them relentlessly, pleading for the opportunity to try scuba diving. Finally, age brought with it the privilege to enroll in a beginner's course. I remember vividly the trepidation that gripped me during my first encounter with the deep blue. The prospect of swapping the familiar terrain of land for the enigmatic abyss of the sea was daunting. Underwater, my voice would be swallowed by the vast expanse, my cries of alarm or joy would go unheard. Yet, a whisper of courage nudged me, reminding me of the adage, "Courage is trying something new and possibly succeeding." It was this echo that steeled my resolve.
As I ventured into the aquatic world, my gaze was locked onto my instructor, my beacon in the unfamiliar depths. But as I descended further, my fear ebbed away, replaced by a newfound clarity and focus. Submerged nearly fifteen meters beneath the surface, I was greeted by a world teeming with life that was nothing short of enchanting. There were moments when I found myself holding my breath, not out of fear, but out of sheer awe of the sights that unfurled before me. Time seemed to stretch, allowing me to etch each moment, each spectacle into my memory. The reality beneath the waves surpassed my wildest imagination. My first dive, lasting less than thirty minutes, left me yearning for more, and I was determined to share this surreal experience with my friends.
When my parents acquiesced to my vacation plans, my joy knew no bounds. Not only was I eager to revisit the underwater realm, but I also wished for my friends to share in this unique experience. Especially Michael, who was skeptical about the value of such an adventure. My plans were laid out meticulously - my scuba gear was prepped, my friends were on board, and the ideal diving spot was booked. In my anticipation, I also dove into the world of scuba diving trivia. I discovered that SCUBA was an acronym for Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus, and that an astonishing 71% of our planet was water, with 85% of it remaining unexplored. While we aimed for the stars, our oceans, teeming with mysteries, lay uncharted. The record for the deepest dive stood at a staggering 332.35 meters, held by an Egyptian diver named Ahmed Gabr. It took him twelve minutes to reach this depth but a nerve-wracking fifteen hours to resurface. As I read this, I felt a chill creep up my spine. The facts that once seemed fun were starting to appear daunting. Yet, the thrill of the unknown was too enticing to resist.[Bloem, Andrew. (2021) Fun facts about scuba diving.]
While Gabr's feat was commendable, my aspirations were considerably more modest. The thrill of the unknown was my lure, not the ambition to break records. However, as the date of the dive drew near, an undercurrent of nervous anticipation mingled with my excitement. On the day of the dive, we set out early, the calm sea reflecting the clear sky in its tranquil surface. My friend, who was a seasoned diver, declared it a perfect day for diving, his enthusiasm infectious. As we reached the spot and began donning our gear, my thoughts meandered back to Gabr. In some ways, he embodied the closest real-world representation of Aquaman. I mused on whether he might have stumbled upon the mythical city of Poseidonis had he descended further.
As I strapped into my scuba gear, my heart echoed the rhythm of the waves, pounding against my chest. The vast expanse of the sea, a colossal entity before me, felt alive, its every wave a breath. I sought comfort in my friends' faces, and their radiant smiles provided the reassurance I needed. Together, we took the plunge, descend...
