Organization: Texas A&M Forest Service Disaster: Wildfires Focal Community: Rural communities in East Texas Focal Issue: Preparedness Context: Texas is a large and increasingly diverse state. The state has more federally declared disasters than any other jurisdiction in the United States. Wildfires are a significant risk to citizens, critical infrastructure, and property within the state (Moorehead, 2023, p.1; Texas A&M Forest Service, 2020, p.4). The fundamental causes of recurrent wildfires include changing land use approaches, volatile weather patterns, and population growth. TFS and local firefighters noted that they have lost over 5,328 homes and salves 130,080 residences since 2005 (Texas A&M Forest Service, 2020, p.4). Many rural communities, especially in East Texas, are more vulnerable due to limited firefighting resources and infrastructure access. The first day should entail an immediate response; the first week involves stabilization and support, while the first month should encompass recovery and preparedness efforts. As the National Environmental Health Association (2023) recommends, these efforts should incorporate multiagency coordination.
