The Business World in the Foreseeable Future
For anyone hoping to delve into the business world in the foreseeable future, group work is utterly important. Working in a group of more than one person helps individuals to substantially develop several crucial abilities, such as cognitive and leadership. By developing cognitive abilities, group members are empowered to express their sentiments to others and themselves. On the other hand, leadership skills equip one with the ability to make sound decisions. In addition, group work enhances collaboration toward the achievement of common goals (Wilson et al., 2018). Similarly, it helps in developing communication and teamwork skills. However, group work comes with its fair share of problems.
Challenges
Our group was made up of six young and energetic members. Our company aims to build a smart health and elderly comprehensive service cloud. Our foremost goal is to develop smart terminal detection monitoring devices. In our group work, we had to contend with such challenges as time management and personal conflicts (Isaac & Tormey, 2014). In addition, we had to overcome communication obstacles. However, we decided to take these challenges as a learning experience, and we did not let them derail us from achieving our shared objectives.
One of the most significant challenges that we faced as a group was the constraint of time management. According to Perez-Gonzlez (2021), time management refers to making decisions in a way that helps in protecting and adapting time to changing conditions. In this regard, I must note that we had to juggle our group work with other equally important tasks. I must also add that we had to carry out extensive research, which was labour-intensive and time-consuming. As such, we found ourselves pressed for time almost all the time. Some members found it extremely difficult to manage their time and were sometimes late for group meetings or finishing tasks delegated to them. Lack of time management, at the outset, compounded the already complex situation, considerably affecting our performance (Pérez-González, 2021). We found ourselves mostly lagging behind our schedules. Therefore, achieving our projected goals was always almost out of reach. The prospects of our venture looked very bright, and the notion of failure was frightening and mentally exhausting. At times it even affected our interrelationships because we felt that some of us needed to do more if we hoped to succeed.
Further, our group had to contend with the challenge of communication and collecting data. As the group members, we favoured different communication preferences (Zajac et al., 2021). This was a result of conflicting personalities, and it affected the way we exchanged information. In addition, the kind of venture we intended to undertake required us to have loads of information at our fingertips. For instance, we had to know the types of smart health services that would be in huge demand in the foreseeable future. We also had to understand which smart gadgets to involve in our prospects. We had to retrieve much of this information online, which sometimes posed an almost insurmountable challenge. This is because most of the people from whom we needed information were poor communicators. Similarly, we needed to collect data on pensioners from government management platforms. In some instances, such information was not readily forthcoming. This really hampered our progress. In addition, we needed to conduct comprehensive research to understand the market dynamics to project our financial prospects.
Solving the Challenges
As I indicated earlier, we decided to take the various challenges that came our way as a learning process. Despite the situation being so dire, and emotionally draining, we had to overcome the challenges. As such, we endeavoured to review, understand, and overcome them against all odds (Ribeiro et al., 2019). This is because we understood clearly that our company had prodigious prospects in the future. Being an SME, we were also not lost to the fact that our projected company would form part of the backbone of our country's economy (Yoshino & Taghizadeh-Hesary, 2016). In addition, we knew that overcoming the time management hurdle would save us from the anxiety and negative emotions that come with time pressure (Goldsby et al., 2020). Time management would also significantly help us attain enhanced performance and effectiveness.
On the other hand, we needed to overcome the communication challenge for several reasons. Therefore, we had to formulate an effective communication system. This is because effective communication among ourselves would significantly boost our morale (Shannon, 2018). In addition, it was paramount that we communicated on the same wavelengths. This would enhance our performance and productivity. Of equal importance, we needed to consolidate our collaboration with elderly care institutions and major hospitals. We could not achieve this unless we adopted an effective communication strategy.
Our nature of being profoundly energetic and visionary helped us to immensely overcome the challenges that accosted us, especially at the beginning. We agreed to dedicate as much of our time as possible to the project. This included working for long and odd hours. As I noted earlier, we had to carry out extensive surveys. Any slackening on our part would significantly hamper our progress. In addition, we agreed to discard our different communication preferences and adopt an agreeable communication strategy. Just as well, since we were pursuing a shared goal.
