Discussion About a Moral Point of View on the Film "Sophie’s Choice"
1. In the novel (and film)Sophie’s Choice, a young woman with two small children arrives at a concentration camp and is presented with a terrible choice. She can choose one of her children to be saved from the gas chamber, in which case the other child will die (Option A); or she can refuse to choose between the two children, in which case both of them will die (Option B). Two philosophystudents, Archie and Betty, are discussing which option is better from a moralpoint of view. Archie thinks that Option A is morally preferable to Option B, whereas Betty thinks that Option B is morally preferable to Option A. Drawing on one or more of the normative ethical theories we’ve discussed in the course(consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics), write a philosophical dialogue between Archie and Betty in which each character tries to convince the other of the superiority of his or her position.

Archie and Betty discussing Sophie’s Dilemma
Archie: Well, based on the circumstances, it seems that Option A would indeed be the best choice.
Betty: Why do you say so?
Archie: Because from our studies of consequentialism, it is clear that Sophie would still have one remaining child left as compared to not having any at all. While it is still immoral, it would help her have company and continue her lineage.
Betty: I beg to disagree with that. Yes, I understand that if Sophie would choose Option A, she would have a child and would retain her lineage as a consequence. However, this would have a more tremendous emotional trauma for her and for her child?
