Reflection on Developmental Psychology in Trauma Counseling
Two learning outcomes that resonate deeply with my future role as a Trauma Counselor for Children are: “Articulate the major theoretical, historical, and conceptual ideas that underpin psychology” and “Apply results of psychological research to contemporary issues in the field.”
The above outcomes are essential because, as Knefel et al. (2023) assert, trauma counseling is based on developmental psychology, including concepts such as developmental traumatology and ecological systems theory. Knowledge of these frameworks enables the counselor to identify how trauma affects neurobiological and psychosocial development and to apply this knowledge to the child’s developmental age. For instance, knowing about Erikson’s psychosocial stages provides insight as to why a traumatized toddler cannot trust or have hope and why an adolescent has an identity crisis (Cooke et al., 2021).
