Statement of Purpose Name: Affiliation: Course: Instructor: Date: Statement of Purpose I first saw the transformation that could be effected through mental health counseling during my time volunteering at a shelter for survivors of domestic violence. The emotional and psychological challenges they faced, combined with the profound support they received from counselors, set my soul on fire. This experience has driven me to pursue a career in mental health counseling, which will enable me to support individuals facing mental health challenges, especially within marginalized populations. Academic Background Through these three and half years of undergraduate psychology education, I gained knowledge of psychological principles and therapeutic interventions. These range from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) courses on Abnormal Psychology that helped me to become versed in the difficulties involving poor mental health to some of the most evidence-based therapies out there. One valuable opportunity arose with my work as a research assistant to Dr. Gonzalez; this was part of his project on anxiety and depression in young adults.
