Purpose
To develop knowledge and skills in analysing students' rational number diagnostic assessment data
To understand the role of moderation when forming judgements concerning analysis of data
To extend knowledge and skills in using assessment data to inform reports for an in-service teacher and families, setting goals for student learning, and choosing tasks with the intention of improving student learning
Brief description of task
You will be assigned a case study.
Each case study will include details of a learner, their recent learning experiences in mathematics, and their diagnostic assessment data.
You will:
Review and analyse the assessment data on your own.
Identify NSW curriculum links, including content and proficiencies assessed in the diagnostic assessment
Identify learner strengths
Identify learner needs
Moderation of findings (with case study partner): [I will complete this section]
Compare your findings with a case study partner (include the name of your case study partner in your report)
Consistency across both sets of findings requires discussion and justification for judgements.
Teacher report (individual task)
Write a concise report that informs a teacher of the students' mathematical knowledge (include examples from the diagnostic task)
Identify the student misconceptions (include examples from the diagnostic task)
Include a description of the moderation process undertaken to arrive at the final assessment of the learner.
Propose recommendations for future teaching and learning that would address the student's specific learning needs (Learning goals - no more than 2 or 3)
You MUST align any of your judgements/ suggestions/ goals or findings with the research literature and mathematics curricula from your state (NSW) or territory.
Family/ caregiver report
develop a 'family-friendly' 100 word overview which will focus on the key aspects of the report and inform care givers of the students abilities and future goals
Rational number tasks
Select and describe TWO (2) rational number tasks that you believe will meet the student's specific needs/ learning goals.

EDMA291 Assessment Task 1: Case Study Analysis
PST name:Add your name here
Student ID:Add your ACU student number here
EDMA291 colleague name (moderation partner): Add the name of your EDMA291 moderation colleague here
Case study learner’s name: Lucy
First-level data analysis and interpretation (Not included in the word count)
Hunches, gut feelings, initial thoughts
Data excerpts to support analysis and interpretation
Knowledge (understanding of rational number ideas)
Lucy demonstrates a proficient understanding of fundamental fraction problem-solving. She comprehends the principle of determining a common denominator for two fractions.
Lucy possesses a robust understanding of number lines and demonstrates proficiency in recognizing decimal numbers. She exhibits a robust comprehension of hundredths and thousandths but encounters difficulties in recognizing certain notions, such as tenths; she concedes her errors.
For instance, in the first section (Fraction pie), Lucy demonstrated mathematical reasoning, she says that “you need to check the parts are equal, then how the whole is cut up. Like, six equal parts will be sixths.”
She says that six thirds is the same as two and demonstrated using a number line.
Lucy says that “I know that one’s wrong.”
Skills (strategies / ways of working mathematically with rational number ideas)
Lucy has strategic thinking abilities. She excels at comprehending and interpreting visual representations of fractions, employing visual illustrations and models in her problem-solving approaches. She possesses a proficient understanding of fractions, referencing both the numerator and the denominator.
Attitudes (feelings, emotions, beliefs about rational numbers)
Lucy exhibits a positive attitude towards rational numbers, as shown by her attempts to understand and solve problems while articulating arguments for her answers. She possesses confidence in fundamental fractions and maintains an optimistic attitude towards decimal fractions.
Through the assessment, she uses terms such as “I know that one’s wrong” and “I am not really sure.”
Moderation process 100 words
In this section, you will describe the moderation process that you and your partner did to understand more fully the ability and needs of your student. You can present the discussion process as a diagram that shows the steps of your moderation, or you can write this as a step-by-step procedure. Even though your partner and you used the same moderation process, your presentation of the process must be different from your partner’s representation.
Report for in-service teacher 250 words
The first-level data provides insights into Lucy’s understanding of rational numbers. It mostly emphasizes fractions and decimal fractions. Students must have a thorough comprehension of rational numbers to enhance their tactical thinking and mathematical reasoning skills. Lucy’s paper articulates her comprehension, skills, and viewpoints concerning logical fractions. The report indicates that the interviewer can infer that Lucy possesses a robust comprehension of fundamental fractions. She had a fundamental comprehension of fractions, correctly recognizing basic fractions such as 1/4 and 1/6 and their positions on a number line. One of the competencies she meets from the Australian curriculum is the ACMNA125 (ACARA, n.d.). Lucy is capable of comparing and resolving greater fractions with closely related denominators. Unde...
