Chapter 3 Understand Yourself feature gave you the chance to self-assess your work locus of control. Higher scores on the measure reflect a more external locus of control. Managers tend to have a more internal locus of control. After completing the self-assessment, answer the following questions:
Do you think that your score accurately reflects your locus of control at work? Why or why not?
How do you think that work locus of control might influence your effectiveness as a manager?
What do you think is the ideal locus of control in a work setting and why?
What might you do in the next year to make your work locus of control consistent with your answer to number 3?

Do you think that your score accurately reflects your locus of control at work? Why or why not?
Yes. The score of 28 out of a possible 112 accurately reflects my locus of control at work.
I believe the score is accurate because it affirms my decision-making process. While making any decision in life, it takes me several steps before I finally settle on a particular idea. Further, the idea I settle on happens to be one that has been carefully thought about and finally proven to have the desired results. Often, I make tactical decisions that seek to elicit or produce results that I envision. Whenever the implemented idea or decision fails to produce the desired results, I usually find ways to expose the loopholes that may have existed or that may have led to failure in the plans I have.
Secondly, I often come across articles talking about job satisfaction and how it depends on what the employer does for the employees. While this statement is true in some circumstances, I believe I am currently pursuing a field that fits me perfectly. For me, job satisfaction comes from what I do, and at times, I happen to conjure satisfaction from a task that I am working on. Every time I am given a new challenge, I consider it an avenue to learn new things and equip myself with more skills. Therefore, my satisfaction comes from the job itself. This is in line with Padmanabhan’s (2021) assertions that individuals with an internal locus of control happen to perceive their jobs differently. For me, my performance is solely dependent on what I do every day. Therefore, I take every step to make sure that I am prepared and ready for the day’s tasks.
How do you think that work locus of control might influence your effectiveness as a manager?
I believe that my work locus of control will greatly impact my effectiveness as a manager. My effectiveness is bound to be enhanced because of being task-oriented. According to Nair and Yuvaraj (2000), individuals considered to have an internal locus of control are more task-oriented than those considered externals. This means that I will seek to accomplish as many tasks as possible and be more involved in what is happening around me. Further, Nair and Yuvaraj (2000) indicate that as an internal, I will focus more on areas like scheduling of tasks, setting goals, operational procedures, manager-employee relationship, accomplishing tasks, the workplace environment, and the policies impacting employees and their abilities to deliver on different fronts....
