The Grand Strategy Selection Matrix in Four Quadrants for Tesla Automobile Company
Week 1:
Visit the following page: http://www(dot)slideshare(dot)net/garyma_sharma/popular-strategy-diagrams and read about the Grand Strategy Selection Matrix, or GSSM.
Note: The GSSM should not be confused with the Grand Strategy Matrix (GSM) (http://mba-lectures(dot)com/management/strategic-management/1129/grand-strategy-matrix.html) which we will explore further in Week 2 of this Discussion (see below). (be sure that you take note of the differences in the X and Y axes of both tools).
Then, apply the Grand Strategy Selection Matrix to the company you selected for your SLP, discussing the rationale for your choice of:
Overcome weaknesses vs. maximize strengths; and
Direction of resources (i.e., internally vs. externally focused).
Which quadrant does your chosen company fit within? What grand strategy (or strategies) would you choose? Why? Be specific.
Week 2:
Now, apply the GSM to your organization. Is your choice of grand strategy different from the results from your use of the GSSM (in Week 1 above)? Discuss.
The Grand Strategy Selection Matrix is very similar to the Grand Strategy Matrix, where the X axe is based on the resources inside or outside the company. At the same time, the Y axe focuses on how to surpass the weakness or increase the company's strengths. The companies can be identified in four quadrants. Tesla is a customer design-oriented electric automobile company.
I think: Quadrant IV should include market development and innovation. This is because Tesla is already considered as a highly innovative company as well as one that is in a highly anticipated and developing market. Thus, by redirecting more of its resources to these two endeavors, the company could become one of the leading car manufacturers in the future.
I think Quadrant III should include joint venture and localization. Although one of Tesla’s main strengths is its popularity among its consumers, it would need to expand more to other countries to make access and distribution easier. Thus, localization should be one of its main endeavors.
I think Quadrant II must be supplier diversification. Tesla's battery supplier comes from a single supplier, thereby increasing its supplier power over it, as well as increasing risks CITATION Gai20 \l 1033 (Gaille, 2020). Thus, it must use external partnerships to address this.
I think Quadrant I should include customer-service improvement. Reports state that its customer service is not as good as other car companies. Thus, internal redirection of the budget should focus on this aspect, especially for a fast-growing company like Tesla.
