Final Reflection
At the beginning of ISP100, I was surprised to learn about writing, instead of doing it. Writing about Writing by Elizabeth Wardle and Doug Downs has been helpful to me throughout the semester, particularly when it comes to navigating writing. For instance, I learned that the only way to change how I write is by learning about writing (Wardle & Downs, 2020, p.75). In other words, changing ideas about writing has helped me to write effectively in both formal and informal contexts. Throughout the semester I have been learning about writing, and it has significantly helped me improve how I express myself, contributing to my mastery of effective communication.
The ideas obtained from ISP100 throughout the course are relevant to me and have significantly enabled me to improve my writing skills. Wardle and Downs make it clear that what a person believes about writing has direct effects on an individual’s willingness to write (Wardle & Downs, 2020, p.80). For instance, if a person thinks that he or she is a bad writer because the individual struggles to complete writing tests, one can be demotivated to try different kinds of writing. As such, learning about writing opens a person’s eyes and has enabled me to understand how and why I should explore distinctive writing styles. Since the semester started, my writing skills have significantly been improving since I have known that a person can be good in specific types of writing and be poor in others. However, all in all, there is room for improvement.
