There has been a resurgence of debates over the nature of indigenous peoples and indigenous rights in the last two decades. At the center of these debates is the relationship between indigenous peoples and the state, with many critics charging that the state is complicit in the destruction of indigenous cultures. Meanwhile, indigenous rights activists have called attention to the state’s failure to protect and provide for indigenous populations. These debates have been formulated within the framework of a history of colonialism and indigeneity in India.
