The Gilded Age brought prosperity and an improved American experience through fast industrial progress, while leaving the people in slums and ghettos with extreme hardship. Jacob Riis’s recreated 1888 lectures, packed with realistic pictures of the poor people of that time, and his book How the Other Half Lives, unveil the dark side of industrial growth that favored only the wealthy, and put the poor in pitiable living conditions.
The poor suffered because they were exploited. Their basic means of earning included industrial and manual labor, which needed long hours in factories, sweatshops, construction sites, or in homes as domestic workers for low wages. Immigrants had to accept low pay for many hours per day only because they had no other option open to them. As a result, poverty was sustained not because they were lazy, but their wages were not sufficient to fulfill their basic human needs (Riis, 2010). Hence...
