Two internal biological mechanisms operate to regulate sleep or wakeness. The first mechanism is called circadian rhythms which direct wakefulness, body temperature, metabolism, and hormone release. Circadian rhythms are systemic and follow a 24-hour cycle depending on the various environmental cues such as temperature or light. Ultimately, circadian rhythms also influence sleep timing thereby making people sleepy at night and awake in morning hours (Open RN).
The second biological mechanism that regulates sleep is called the sleep-wake homeostasis. The sleep-wake homeostasis regulates sleep by performing three functions. Firstly, it tracks the body’s need for sleep. Secondly, it builds sleep pressure through an elongated time duration, which normally peaks in the evening (Open RN). Finally, homeostasis regulates sleep intensity thereby ensuring that people have deeper sleep after deprivation.
