Rheumatoid arthritis is a type of musculoskeletal dysfunction that is also an autoimmune disorder. RA or rheumatoid arthritis is a result of the body’s overactive immune system attacking the synovial joints and causing sever inflammation. This can lead to deformity of the joint and eventually loss of function (Falkner & Green, 2022). RA is suspected to be triggered by an external factor to someone who is a genetic carrier. Triggers can be anything from an infection, illness, or trauma. The initials symptoms often include a fever, malaise, joint pain, and weakness. It usually then progresses to chronic joint pain and swelling as the immune system attacks the cartilage and synovial lining of the joint (Ranatunga, 2023). This autoimmune musculoskeletal disorder can progressively worsen, without treatment, and lead to debilitating joint deformity and chronic pain. Patients who live with RA often must make conscious efforts and planning around their disease in order to accomplish daily tasks. Treatments include hot and cold therapy for joint pain, physical and occupational therapy for function, as well as various medication managements (Ranatunga 2023). Early detection and diagnosis can make a significant difference in starting treatment early on and slow the progression of joint degeneration.
