Summary of Clinical Issue: Perinatal depression is among the most concerning health issues among pregnant women and young mothers. Young mothers or pregnant women face multiple mental health challenges in the period between their conception and 12 months after birth. Perinatal depression is a medical term used to refer to the depressive, anxiety, and stress symptoms that pregnant women or new mothers experience in the perinatal period, which is the period between conception and a year after birth. During the perinatal period, women can experience triggers ranging from miscarriages, stillbirths, terminations, or children born with challenges such as disability or mental health issues. The prevalence of perinatal depression in the US is worth exploring. The current data indicates that one in seven pregnant women experience depressive symptoms in the US. Additionally, one in every five to eight postpartum women are exposed to different forms of depression. The number of women who have experienced depressive symptoms in the US stands at 11.5% in the latest data. Analyses indicate that an increase in behaviors such as consumption of alcohol or excessive smoking could steer more cases of perinatal depression. The other risk factors that have been discussed to fuel the prevalence of the condition include lack of social support in the perinatal period, unhealthy reproductive behaviors, low SES, and the fear of childbirth.
