Nursing Questions Response
Reflect on the different aspects of caring Using either Mayeroff’s (1971) and Longfellow’s poem Santa Filomena (1893). What affect do these readings have on your conceptualization and practice of nursing? What messages, perceptions, and understandings will you bring back to your peers and colleagues about caring and the effect of this on the care on your unit/floor/agency?
Nursing is a sensitive and complex profession that significantly influences the quality of care and outcomes in a healthcare facility. After reading the text by Mayeroff (1971), the fundamental nature of nursing processes and understandings become clearer. My conceptualization of the nursing practice was singular and focused on care delivery. However, the interactions with the primary caring ingredients outlined by Mayeroff improved my views. As a result, I now have a holistic perception of the practice through a grounded understanding of the critical components that distinguish nursing. For instance, Mayeroff emphasizes that the quality of practice relies on seamless interactions between the care provider and the patient to ensure that the expert recognizes the client’s needs and addresses them appropriately. Moreover, the practice combines diverse interlinked values, including honesty, patience, hope, humility, trust, and courage. Nursing displays these qualities as a package, making it a caring practice.
The reading by Mayeroff instills numerous transformative learnings. For instance, the new understanding of the caring ingredients reveals that nurses must remain prepared to execute demanding services that need absolute sacrifice and commitment. Caring is more than routine service delivery because it percolates to more critical aspects, including deeper interaction with patients to know them better and tailor services to meet their needs. It also incorporates multiple values to maintain care at the best levels. Sharing these messages and perceptions with my colleagues and peers would be essential to ensure that we work as a team to boost our unit’s overall efficiency and quality.
Define the concept of stewardship (provide references). Stewardship is commonly referred to within the realm of environmental stewardship or religious stewardship. However, the term can be applied in other ways. What is the significance of this concept to the profession of nursing? What does it mean to you as an individual and as a professional?
Stewardship is the concept of integrating different values, responsibility, resource managing, and planning with a caring attitude to ensure projected results (Donnelley, 2018). This concept has gained significant influence in the nursing profession. For instance, nurses demonstrate stewardship by carefully planning care, using resources efficiently, and managing the patients to ensure they gradually regain their health. Such a process makes these experts stewards of the health outcomes of their clients, demanding them to value and respect the priorities of their patients and their self-determination (Donnelley, 2018). The author illustrates that nursing care, education, and other processes translate to stewardship as nurses become responsible for their patients and guide them throughout recovery. The systematic objective of informing individuals about their health condition, creating awareness about the modifications they should prioritize, and monitoring their progress reflects stewardship. Thus, this component is fundamental to the nursing profession.
This concept is influential in my life. I recognize its influence in assisting me in caring for my siblings and environment in various ways. Moreover, it makes me a steward of my career because I have to remain focused, plan appropriately, and manage the resources at my disposal to ensure that I progress gradually towards my future goals. As a healthcare provider, stewardship remains an intrinsic component that influences my decision-making process. Understanding this concept demonstrates why I prioritize constant learning about emerging approaches in care because I desire to stay updated with the latest practice to provide quality care to my patients. Such an aspect ensures that I remain adequately versed with the latest knowledge in the sector.
