Overall Practicum Goals (Week 1)

Overall Practicum Goals: Use the S.M.A.R.T. goal format to create goals you have for your overall practicum experience. Be sure your goals are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound (S.M.A.R.T. goals). Type your five practicum goals in the space below. Consider what you want to accomplish during this practicum course. You may choose to focus in on a specific aspect of nursing education or a variety of nursing education experiences within your selected practicum setting and population. Review these goals with your preceptor/mentor prior to submission or as soon as possible.
Goal 1
S: I will establish a working with students, instructors, and faculty members to ensure a smooth learning process.
M: The goal of success can be measured by observing quality interactions or communications and showing the ability to recognize learners by names.
A: I can attain this goal by collaborating with educators and students to enhance learning.
R: For a practicing nurse, ensuring effective rapport and communication is crucial as it allows easy passing of relevant information between professional and patients for improved health outcomes. Ward (2018) informs that creating good relationships in clinical settings is essential to support safety, improved medical services, and better utilization of resources.
T: I hope to attain the goal by the end of the first week of the practicum program.
Goal 2
S: I will help students to improve communication skills and acquire a good attitude and respect to embrace diverse cultural population.
M: The success of such an objective can be measured by examining students’ ability to initiate conversations with patients and gather detailed histories for clinical assessments.
A: I can obtain this goal during my practicum.
R: Communication skills such as listening and providing feedback in nursing are an integral part to patient care. Moreover, they help engage with individuals from different backgrounds and efficiently understand and attend to specific needs. According to Young and Guo (2020), patient diversity is large, and a competent professional should comprehensively assess relevant health aspects by engaging with patients in an interactive approach.
T: I hope to achieve this goal by the end of the second week.
Goal 3
S: I will guide learners on utilizing evidence-based information in learning, selecting educational interventions, and making clinical decisions for better outcomes.
M: My success with the goal will be measured by reviews or evaluation of outcomes whereby evidence-based results of decisions made are monitored and analyzed to determine the effectiveness. Also, to tell if students used evidence-based resources, learners would criticize materials for credibility, reliability, and validity.
A: I can attain this goal by applying approaches like case studies, learning reflections, and evaluating evidence-based resources.
R: Evidence-based approaches are crucial in nursing and learning as they help develop reliable interventions for better outcomes. In clinical settings, evidence-based procedures provide opportunities for individualized care and streamlined services to impact clinical judgment (Melnyk et al., 2018). High quality patient care in nursing specialties depends on evidence-based practices.

Goal 4
S: I will teach students the value and developing critical thinking skills to overcome clinical challenges.
M: My success with this goal can be measured by integrating validated tools for skill tests. Critical thinking mindset measure can help examine people’s consistent internal motivation or willingness to reason critically during situations.
A: I can attain this goal during the practicum by administering regular questions to assess thinking progress.
R: Possessing critical thinking abilities is paramount since learners can exhibit the spirit of reasoning, questioning, or progressive inquiry and participation. Fletcher et al., (2018) informs that self-reflections, journals, and case studies are vital resources to help build critical thinking.
