Nurses play a significant role in teaching patients about health, thereby improving health literacy among patients. According to Bastable (2019), nurses' role and responsibility as health educators involve ensuring that patients are ready to take responsibility for their care. When patients are ready for self-care, they can improve, maintain, and manage their health and care independently. Through patient education, nurses can ensure that patients have an improved quality of life, are compliant with the care and treatment plans, and can reduce the incidence of disease by adopting health promotion behaviors and being proactive with their health (Bastable, 2019).
