Nursing supervisors
Nurses play a critical role in the provision of healthcare services. All over the world, nurses form the majority of healthcare workers. Without nurses, it would be impossible for the healthcare system to function effectively (Butler & Diaz, 2017). This highlights the critical role nurses play in the success of healthcare services. Nursing supervisors then need to understand the challenges facing their members. Due to the demand placed upon nurses, the work is strenuous. It is difficult for nurses to meet all the demands placed upon them, especially with the shortages they experience. This brings the essence of nursing supervisors providing transformational leadership needed to support the nursing staff. Supervisors must be at the forefront in providing the kind of leadership needed to ensure a healthy working environment for nurses.
Nursing supervisors need to employ transformational leadership. In this leadership approach, instead of the supervisors dictating what should be done, they instead motivate nurses to do it. Transformational supervisors endeavor to inspire their followers to work towards achieving the set objectives (Li et al. 2019). Such leaders appreciate that their followers operate in challenging environments, hence the need for motivation. Instead of dictating what nurses should do, supervisors should be role models. There is a need for supervisors to create an enabling environment for all nurses. Supervisors need to listen to nurses and address the concerns they have. Often, nurses raise issues affecting the care of patients and expect their supervisors to address such issues. As transformational leaders, supervisors should be willing to appreciate the feedback received from their staff members. When nurses feel that their concerns are being addressed, they will work towards ensuring better health outcomes for their patients.
