The graph that I have selected is from an article by Pradeepa and Mohan (2021) titled "Epidemiology of type 2 diabetes in India" and it highlights the major death causes in India’s total fatalities in 1990 and 2016. I made the decision to choose the graph (Figure 1) because, through its visualization, it captures well the shifting health landscape of the country, including the surge in overall disease burden and deaths from Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) and injuries, as well as the reduction in mortality from infectious diseases (Perng et al., 2023). In 1990, in India, Communicable, Maternal, Neonatal, and Nutritional Disorders (CMNNDs) contributed to 61% of the overall Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), with 9% from injuries, and with 30% from NCDs (Pradeepa & Mohan, 2021). However, significant epidemiological shifts in India have led to a decline in total DALYs from CMNNDs to 33% by 2016, while those from injuries and NCDs have surged to 12% and 55% respectively. Nationally, the DALY rate for diabetes in 2016 was four times higher compared to 1990 (Pradeepa & Mohan, 2021). Moreover, among the foremost individual causes of DALYs in India, a majority of NCDs have ascended in rank since 1990, with diabetes witnessing a remarkable rise to 13th place in 2016 from 35th place in 1990.
