The nursing profession has been present in early histories, such as during the Great Roman Empire, and has been continuously evolving to provide the needs of the population. In places like Europe and America, many advancements and innovations had taken place, influenced by aspects such as religion, economic status, and politics. In the long history of mankind, the World War I and its aftermath is one of the noteworthy events that had greatly affected many lives all over the globe, and although there were a lot of casualties, a different perspective is present when it comes to nursing as a profession after the World War 1.
Whenever the First World War is mentioned or seen in the movies or television, the main focus is on the soldiers who fought bravely and showed nationalism to their countries, sacrificing themselves to offer their service to the country and its people. With this being said, there were a lot of wounded soldiers and their number continued to multiply in the hospitals and health centers, leaving the front lines of the health division overwhelmed and lacking. This led to an unregulated voluntary service of treating the wounded and the ill during these dark times (Telford, 2010). The voluntary work was done by mostly women and this did not just help treat a lot of soldiers and patients but it paved the way for women to be part of the healthcare that we know of today.
