SHIA HOCKEY
When it comes to sports, what most people know involves football, rugby or basketball. However, under the fanfare of these three, comes hockey, a sport that has some of the most interesting rules any game can ever have. Hockey is an outdoor game that is played around the globe by players across many nations. Hockey is also popular in some countries like Great Britain, India, Pakistan, and New Zealand. In fact, it is the national sport in Canada and India. Since 1928, hockey has become one of the most attended sports around the world. Like most other sports, it involves two opposing teams, each having eleven players. When playing hockey, a player has to hit the ball using a stick into the goal. A team is awarded a goal once the ball crosses the goal line of the opponent.
Hockey is an exciting game, and it has a lot of health benefits. Playing hockey has a lot of benefits. For example, it improves concentration because an individual can concentrate while still learning. Generally, hockey improves the mental agility of the players. As a coach or a trainer taking over from another, it is important to have certain aspects to apply, so as to keep the players motivated. There are also a set of skills that a typical hockey player needs to possess, from the defensive, mental up to the offensive aspect.
Part One: Skills
1 Skating
There are basic skills that are needed in hockey. First, skating is an essential skill because if a person cannot be able to skate, then it is impossible to play hockey on a high level. Skating is also necessary because it assists in enhancing other skills that are needed. When learning to skate, children should learn to skate, must possess fundamental movements of coordination, agility, and balance. Thus agility acceleration, defense, and spend are necessary skating skills. As players continue to grow, their skating skills must continue to develop, and they should be in a position to play effectively. Skating is an essential skill for all the hockey players, both offensive and defensive. This is because, all these players will need to have a great degree of agility in movement as well as turning, so as to counter the opponent at whichever position.
Additionally, shooting and puck handling are also crucial. Young children must be able to balance and have a stance. In Hockey, skating skills should continue to get developed throughout the career. First, players are introduced to the necessary skating skills that are novice and Timbits' initiation. With time players should continue to develop the skills and refine them later.
Further coaches should also address some of the techniques that are required for proper skating. When skating, players should learn to skate forward after stopping. Once players have been able to pick up the speed, they should take short strides.
2 Defensive Skills
Stick Handling
This is more like the starter pack for playing hockey, since, how can one really play the game without knowing how to handle the puck? This is an essential skill in Hockey. Stickhandling means that a player can move the puck on the ice with the stick while skating. When playing hockey, players must ensure that they keep the puck from their opponents. Knowing how to handle it ,then the rest of the skills can quickly follow and even flow.
Stopping
If hockey players need to skate very fast, then they must know how to stop. This will allow them to prevent colliding with others while playing. They will also be able to have better control of the puck. Additionally, knowing how to stop at high speed can be the difference between a fail and a successful dribble past an opponent, or even a score.
Turning
Turning is essential, especially if players would wish to move to the side without stopping. The best way of turning is by doing crossovers with the opposite leg. Mastering how to perform crossovers is quite important as it is sometimes very tricky and difficult. However, knowing how to perform a turn at high speed also calls for some personal awareness of body balance. It is quite easy to topple over if one doesn’t know how to grow through the motions, especially circular or wavy ones.
Passing
First, Hockey is a team game, and puck should be passed to other team members who can be in a better position to move it to the goal. Passing is very critical when playing hockey because passing the puck to other teammates assists in scoring the goal. A good pass is as good as a good score. Good passing needs one to have great vision and awareness of everything happening around them, as well as some form of understanding with the teammates.
Taking Shots
Taking shots can help change the game quite quickly. It can help prevent a score while it can also help to make one. Taking shots is what gets the puck into the opposing net. There are their types of shots. They are slapshots, the wrist shot, and the snapshot.
Push
This is the ability to speed up once the play has stopped. When it comes to getting the ball to a teammate over long distances, it is a great skill. It can easily and quickly get the ball to a teammate who is in a good position within a split second.
Decking
This is the ability of a player to trick the opponent. Players who are good at these skills must pretend that they are skating or taking a shot to trick the opponent.
Checking.
This is a crucial defensive skill. The main objective of a player is to take the puck from the opponent. There are different types of checks. They include the poke check, a sweep check, and a Lift check.
3 Goalie Skills
When players are not taking any shots, then the Goalie should wait in the ready stance. Goalies must be able to save a puck. There are six categories of a save. They are a V-save, a block save, a glove save, a deck save, a stick save, and a cover up.
Skating is very important for hockey players. This is because an individual cannot be able to play without learning how to skate. Some of the critical features that are needed to perform this skills very well include the following. Skating starts with a simple entry level pair of skates. These skates allows the players to learn on how they can apply pressure when they are turning and stopping. Once players have learned on how to apply pressure, they can be able to move to the model skates. Skates are used to stop, and thus, the bodyweight distribution should be 60% on the front and 40% on the back (Ransom, 2014). Regardless of whether a player is skating using a stick or not, one must skate straight forward or straight backward. The arm swing is also forward and backward.
When executing the pivot, the players should keep the inside shoulder higher than the outside shoulder. This gives them stability because lowering the inside shoulder makes the players lean too much, and they can lose balance in the long run. Players should also keep up the lateral mobility. When skating the power to control the puck, maintain a good speed are some of the most essential attributes of good hockey players. Players must be able to maintain balance, proper transfer of body weight, and use powerful pushes when playing.
4 Offensive Skills.
