However, the scientific community recognizes two main methods that are deemed effective in reading and understanding scientific articles. These methods include the three-pass approach and the SQ3R Method. The Lucidchart below provides a comprehensive guide on these two reading approaches. Figure 1 above provides a quick highlight of the two approaches used in comprehensively reading scientific articles. The first approach as represented on the upper branch of the Lucidchart is the Three-pass Approach. As the name suggests, this method has three phases which Keshav (2007) regards as “three passes.” The reading process starts with pass one which is the overview of the article. During this pass, the learner should carefully study the title, abstract, and introduction of the article. One should also overview the sections and sub-sections of the paper, the introduction, and the references of the article.
