Introduction
Students do face numerous challenges in their studies both at home and school. These challenges at times require collaboration between a teacher, parent and if possible the school social worker should also be present (Arnold, 2013). There are instances when a student could be facing challenges with their studies and social lives and this is the reason why the dialogue between a teacher and parent should be encouraged. It is important to note that a teacher is a very important person in a student’s life because he or she will always spend much time with the student more than parents. There are some teachers who are professionally trained to assist those students with academic, social and emotional challenges. There are also students who have also been introduced to drug abuse by their peers and friends and such student needs collaboration between the parent and the student’s teacher for them to jointly come up with amicable solution to the problems that the student is facing in school. There are also instances when the student might be having problems with his or her teacher. There are those teachers who tend to be autocratic and are very cruel to students and this normally interferes with their self-esteem which in turn will affect their studies and socialization. This play script will be providing a dialogue between a teacher, the parent and the school social worker (Cai, Kaiser, & Hancock, 2004). The teacher is called Mrs. Xiaomin, the school social worker is called Mr. Raymond, the parent is called Ms. Karen and the student is called Mark. Mark has been complaining to his mother about the harsh and cruel attitude of his teacher Mr. Xiaomin and this has made him to start hating school and is considering Quiting School. The parent has taken an initiative to contact the teacher and have a one on one conversation with him concerning the issues that the student has raised about the teacher.
This paper explores the kind of a dialogue between the teacher, parent and in the presence of the school social worker in the form of a play script.
Details of the Play Script
This play script dialogue took place between the teacher, parent and the school social worker. It is important to remember that the dialogue took place in the absence of the student. The dialogue begins with the Mark’s parent entering Mr. Xiaomin’s office, after a few minutes enter Mr. Raymond the School Social worker.
The Dialogue
Teacher: Good Morning Ms. Karen? How have you been all this while? It has been long since we saw each other last, I hope all is well.
Ms. Karen: Thank you teacher for welcoming me to you office. I am fine, I have only been committed at the work place of late that is what has kept away all this while, anyway I hope everything is fine and I really appreciate the work you are doing to help my child to grow up as a responsible person in life.
Raymond: I am absolutely sorry for having arrived late; I hope you have not waited for me for long hours, ones again sorry for having kept you for long. How is everyone anyway?
Mr. Xiaomind and Ms. Karen (All responding at once), we are doing quite well, and you are not very late for the meeting just arrived a few minutes a go.
Mr. Xiamin: Ones again welcome everyone for attending this important dialogue concerning academic prowess of one of my students Mark, whose performance has been dwindling in the recent past and I would like us to discuss on the possible ways for helping Mark improve on his academic performance.
Ms. Karen: thank you for this opportunity to discuss on how we can collectively work together to find ways for helping my son to improve on his social life and academic performance, that have been dwindling of late. To begin with, Mark’s performance in the recent past has been dwindling in the recent past and I can’t understand the reason why this is happening and this has been disturbing for a while. When I try to interrogate him to find where the problem could be, he has been complaining about Xiaomin’s attitude towards him. He has been complaining that Teacher Xiaomin has been harsh with him and this has made him hate school.
Mr. Raymond (feeling alarmed): It is good you have taken the right procedure to find for amicable solution for your child’s problem. Before we continue with this conversation, I would like to remind ourselves about some principles of code of ethics that guides the teachers or educators about their work.
First Principle of the Code of Ethics
According to Parkay, Stanford, & Gougeon (2010), the first principle of code of ethics states that educators or teachers are supposed to nurture, the physical, intellectual, social, emotional, and civic potential of every student in their class. The educators are supposed to promote the growth in all students by integrating, physical, emotional, intellectual, social and also civic learning to bring out an all-round person in the society. The teachers are also supposed to respect the natural dignity of each and every student under their care. The teachers are also required by this principle to help their students to be able to value their personal identity, to be able to practice their civic and the social responsibility, and also the student should also be helped to understand their cultural heritage and appreciate it. The teachers are also supposed to help their students to reflect on their studies and assist them to connect what they have learnt in class in their day to day personal lives.
