I was surprised to learn about the prevalence of gender design preferences, especially how everything in our modern world, from snow clearing to clinical protocols to vehicle safety belts, is designed with the male user in mind. I was angered to learn that one of the reasons designers give for failing to include women in their work is because they have periods, which would affect design test results. While it is true that women are different from men and the biological differences could affect test results, I found that reason particularly farfetched and downright sexist. I think that most designs are created with the male user in mind because women are generally discriminated against.
