Scenario
You are a business development manager reporting to the vice president (VP) of business development at one of the largest life sciences organizations in the Midwest.
You are working with the strategic planning team to assess the current data to make recommendations to its board of directors regarding the organization’s exit strategy. You have started creating your plan for the organizational change and selected members for the guiding coalition. Your next task is to help determine the value of the organization’s assets to the potential acquirer.
One of the core strengths of the organization lies in the value of its talent. Potential buyers in this industry want to know that the organization that they acquire is going to be able retain their valuable employees. So, the VP has asked you to analyze the human resource data in order to determine what the organization is worth. This includes taking a close look at the organization’s human resources, analyzing the attrition data, and making predictions about employee stability in case of an acquisition.
The organization has been collecting information about its employees since its inception in 1999; this information has been organized in a spreadsheet. In order to understand recent trends in your organization's workforce, you will analyze this employee data. Your analysis will look at employee attrition and retention and will be included in your report. This will provide a clear picture of your organization's workforce to help anticipate its perceived value with potential buyers.
Prompt
First, use the employee attrition data to create visuals in Tableau that capture the trends and possible reasons for retention and attrition in the organization from the course scenario. Then, write a report about the current state of human resources and attrition. Include screenshots from your visualizations to support your report. Remember to consider the employee’s employment status when visualizing and analyzing the data. The Status column in the spreadsheet indicates whether the employee is a current or former employee of the organization.
Specifically, you must address the following criteria:
Current employee demographics: Summarize the current employee demographics for the organization from the course scenario.
Use Tableau to visualize the demographic data such as age, sex, marital status, education, and experience, and include the corresponding screenshots in your summary. Choose the graphs or charts that are best suited to represent the demographic data.
Choose at least two different graph or chart types to represent the demographic data and include the corresponding screenshots in your written summary. Explain why you have selected the specific chart types to represent your data.

In this report, the author of this article analyzes the workforce demography and attrition for the organization where he worked in the position of business development manager for one of the biggest life sciences organizations in the Midwest region. Specifically, the purpose of the analysis is to help make informed decisions about the company’s human resources with a specific focus on employees’ turnover and job stability. As would be shown later, such insights are useful when the possibility of an acquisition of the organization is being considered. Employees are an endearing capital and presenting evidence of the many qualified and talented employees on the organization’s payroll may potentially show the organization to be more valuable to a buyer, particularly one that operates in the life sciences sector. Overall, this corporate report also comprises the characterization of the current and ex-employees in terms of age, gender, education level and field of education in the form of the graphical data representation.
Current Employee Demographics
After conducting an analysis of the human resource data, the company found the portrayal of the employee status as pie chart which states the increased retention rate where there were about 1,233 current employee against to 237 ex-employees, which presents an 84% retention rate thereby suggesting the employees are “satisfied, engaged, and committed to the organization” (Memon et al., 2021). Accordingly, this is good for the organization since high turnover means that the organization is reliable for providing workforce hence will attract more buyers.
Figure 1.
Status Count of Employees.
Moving forward to the age distribution, it can be deduced by constructing a box-plot diagram that the current employees possess an average age of about 37.6 while the former employees shop possess an average age of about 33.6 only. The observed lower average age among former employees point to a higher turnover rate of young employees, thus, the present study was consistent with previous workforce studies that have indicated that attrition varies with the age of the employee. However, the significance of this different should be tested with statistical tools to determine whether there is a high correlation between the age of the employees and their turnover rate.
Figure 2.
Gender Distribution among Employees.
Third, gender was presented in the form of a stacked bar chart where it was observed that out of 1233 employees currently working in the organization; 732 are male employees, and 501 are female employees. The retention also seems blur across genders with a slightly higher number of retention in the male employees. Personally, the author believes that this balanced retention is encouraging because research shows that gender diversity might help improve stability of organisations, which is supported by other studies that are done in the same subject matter (Ferrary & Deo, 2023).
Figure 3.
Education Levels (Dark blue for Current; Light Blue for Former employees).
Fourth, this study resulted in the grouped bar chart of the education levels whereby 473 current employees obtained undergraduate degrees, 340 acquired graduate degrees and 238 employees acquired associate degrees. It indicates that high educated employees are likely to have higher retention rates, which can be important in the acquisition situation, as the trained human capital is considered as an appeal.
Figure 4.
Education Field Distribution.
Finally, the distribution of education field was presented in the form of a stacked bar chart. The results specifically show that; 327 of current and 45 of former employees are in Life Sciences; while 239 of current and 40 of former employees are in Medical fields; whereas non GE fields such as Marketing, Human Resource, and Technical Degrees are much fewer. High turnover in core competencies areas like Life Sciences and Medical is beneficial for the organizations’ valuati...
