4-1 Discussion: Major Developments in the Natural Sciences

Throughout civilization, scientists have endeavored to find answers to the questions of the natural world. Their efforts have advanced science and technology to help create the modern world we live in. In this discussion, you will share a significant scientific development related to the topic of your news story and learn about many others from your peers.

Create one initial post and follow up with at least two response posts.

For your initial post, address the following:

Identify a major development relevant to the topic of your news story and the scientist(s) involved. This could be an event, advancement, discovery, or paradigm shift. For example, if your topic is volcanoes, you could discuss the effect of NASA's Earth Observing System Terra satellite, which can detect eruptions in sparsely populated or inaccessible regions. This technological advancement has helped scientists study volcanoes even in areas they can't get to.

Provide a brief summary of the scientific development and the scientist(s) who contributed to it.

Briefly address how this development impacted what we know about your topic and how we study it. Use examples from your news story and from the sources you found that discuss the development.

For your response posts, address the following:

How do you think the developments your peers chose influenced the world outside of the sciences? Why do these developments matter to us as individuals and a society?

4-1 Discussion (based on your news article; initial post due on Thursday, participation posts due on Sunday)

4-2 Activity (based on your news article)

When researching for your discussion post, please keep in mind that the writing prompt is asking that you research a discovery, etc. that lead up to the research in your news article rather than describing the discovery in the news article. Please do a thorough job with this as you will need the research for later in the course. You should not be discussing the discovery made in your news article. Let’s say, for example, my news article discusses antibiotic resistant bacteria. I could research the discovery and development of antibiotics for my discussion post. The discovery should be distinct enough that there is no confusion between the discovery and your news article. Also, the discovery should have come before your news article research, not at the same time or after.

When writing your hypothesis, please use the “If…., then…” format. Another way to think of this is “If A condition is present, then B event will occur.” In this example, the hypothesis is that A is causing B to occur. There should be one ‘if’ condition and one ‘then’ condition.

This activity asked that you finalize your scientific research question using feedback from last week and explain how your values, assumptions and beliefs impacted your research question. While it is impossible to not bring our beliefs and values to a situation, while working in the sciences, it is important to remain as objective as possible and keep an open mind.

here's all the feeback I got from my last week discussion.

I've noticed that over time scientific topics have become much more emotional. While science is based on data and facts, people often don't react in a rational manner to the data. People have an emotional reaction when hearing about topics such as vaccines and climate change. Why do you think this is?

Hello! I believe that whether scientists can be objective or not would depend on each person doing the research. Some people have a hard time shutting their emotions off. So, when one is doing their research, they might come across something that affects the way they continue. As for other people, it could be super easy for them to forget their opinion and go strictly for facts.

Hi, I agree and also think it depends on the situation. Some topics may need more emotion and PASSion to get great results while others this could hinder the results.

Summary of the News Story
According to a scientific investigation, moderate to vigorous physical activity has significant benefits on the cardiovascular system, reducing the risk of incurring cardiovascular diseases, especially among healthy people. Although the amount of physical activity is proportional to the benefits to health, this plateaus in healthy individuals. However, the results are different for people with cardiovascular diseases who exercise regularly. The study found that the amount of physical activity that positively impacts health in these people is infinite, such that the curve does not plateau (PLOS, 2021).
Thesis
The article's central thesis pertains to the significant reduction of the health risks of people who have regular moderate to vigorous physical activity against mortality and non-communicable diseases. The main points presented are based on the investigation by Thijs Eijsvogels at Radboud University Medical Center via a prospective cohort study centered on the health benefits of physical activity to healthy individuals versus people with cardiovascular health diseases. The study revealed the following: First, people who practice regular physical activity achieve an overall reduction in mortality, and this is achieved after exercising for a certain intensity, duration, and frequency. Second, people with cardiovascular disease who practice regular physical activity achieve an overall reduction, but the intensity, duration, and frequency are not limited to a particular guideline. Hence, these people should exercise for many days (PLOS, 2021).
Prior Knowledge and Possible Future Learnings
Prior Knowledge
According to PLOS (2021), the association of physical activity with cardiovascular risks and benefits is not well-understood despite being consistently studied by experts, including scientists and medical professionals.
Possible Future Learnings
The article mentioned "moderate to vigorous physical activity." This is only a qualification instead of a quantification. It is essential to provide specific parameters for these concepts since the article stated that moderate to vigorous physical activity is appropriate for people without cardiovascular health risks. Examples of this are the provision of a specific target heart rate (i.e., seventy percent of the heart rate reserve), frequency (i.e., three to four times a week), duration (i.e., at least 30 minutes), and type of activity (i.e., aerobic exercise, weightlifting).
Another possible learning will be on the specific parameters affected by physical activity. Some example questions are: 1) Does exercise increase cardiac output? 2) Does exercise reduce blood pressure? If yes, then how?
Known Concepts About the News Story
The medical field has already acknowledged the significance of physical activity in reducing mortality and morbidity. This has positively impacted all ages, including the young and the older population, sexes, and ethnicities (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2020). However, I would like to research a specific program with specific parameters that can be used as a strict guideline for patients with cardiovascular diseases.
Value of Scientific Research
Nystoriak & Bhatnagar (2018) explained the significance of research in reducing the mortality and morbidity of the patients. Moreover, the...
