The primary reason that Buddha set out on a journey to different places in the world was to understand different sources of suffering and how to end them. That is discussed in the four noble truths. They include identifying suffering, what causes it, how to end it, and the path to enlightenment. In that light, Buddha introduced meditation to encourage people to be mindful and avoid suffering. Stress is one form of human suffering. As a result, meditation enables individuals to overcome stress, which might lead to pain.
