Theme of Preservation in the Film Foragers by Jumana Manna
Hi all,
I am postponing Does your house have lions because I may be able to schedule a class visit from one of the directors, TBA!
In its place, I decided that since "gleaning" was such a rich topic, we will watch a documentary about foraging and ecology this week: Jumana Manna's Foragers (2022), which screened at MoMA ps1 earlier this year. Please also read the essay "Where Nature Ends and Settlements Begin."
A major theme of the film is "preservation", and the problem when cultural and environmental preservation are in conflict.
Please do not share this link with anyone, because it comes directly from the artist!
Jumana Manna is a Palestinian-American artist, born in 1987. Foragers depicts the dramas around the practice of foraging for wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel with wry humor and a meditative pace. Shot in the Golan Heights, the Galilee and Jerusalem, it employs fiction, documentary and archival footage to portray the impact of Israeli nature protection laws on these customs.
I don't expect you to connect your response to the current conflict; as with all of the films, you may or may not agree with the filmmakers' viewpoints. Rather, I hope this film can help us think about the intertwinement of environmental degradation, forms of preservation, cultural traditions, and conflict. Manna also discusses how she made the film despite the pandemic, and it is an example of how a filmmaker weaves personal/family history with elements of fiction. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
