Describe and elaborate: Two (2) specific elements that stood out to you during his talk. 1_A. The speaker discusses how traits associated with ADHD, like heightened awareness and distractibility, may have been advantageous in hunter-gatherer societies. They suggest the ability to easily notice subtle movements, ripe fruits, or other environmental cues would have contributed to finding food and avoiding predators (Mahamane, 2015). The speaker cites a study that found a genetic variant linked to ADHD restlessness and curiosity benefited men in a nomadic group in Kenya, as they were better nourished than those without the variant. However, for members of that same group who transitioned to a sedentary lifestyle, those with the variant became undernourished compared to others. It implies ADHD traits were evolutionarily adaptive for hunter-gatherer survival and less compatible with sedentary lifestyles (Mahamane, 2015). The speaker uses this evidence to argue ADHD may be less of a disorder and more of a “fish out of water” condition where hunter-gatherer cognitive profiles clash with contemporary environments. 1_B.
