Identify and describe two scenes from the film, Real Women Have Curves, that illustrate the component "Women control and/or enjoy their bodies and sexuality" of the Female Gaze.
A good illustration of the female gaze is in the dress making scene at the factory. The temperatures in the factory get too high, and Ana is forced to remove her shirt. This leaves her mum totally dismayed as a sign of disapproval. Her mum was of the notion that huge women should not expose so much of their bodies. Quite interestingly, Ana’s mum believed that the perfect body for a woman is the thin, slender type, with little to no curves. The scene comes to an end as all the women join in the conversation about how they love their bodies. From this scene, it is clear that women love their bodies and hence are empowered about it.
Appreciation of women’s sexuality and their bodies is also evident when Ana and Jimmy find themselves getting intimate in their room. Jimmy decides to rush for the switch, so that the room can get dark before they continue. Ana, however, wants the lights on, so that she can display her body and Jimmy can appreciate it too. Jimmy therefore switches the lights on. This is a clear illustration of Ana’s level of empowerment, as she loves and appreciates her body, her sexuality. It is a reflection of women empowerment too.

The two faces of oppression that are evident in this scenario are imperialism and powerlessness. Imperialism is the belief that a certain group of people is superior to another. In this case, men feeling superior to women. Powerlessness emanates from the notion that one cannot be autonomous or independent. That they have to depend on someone else. Ana’s instance of powerlessness comes from the scene whereby she pas her sister a visit after completing school. Estela, her sister, is having financial issues and therefore goes to ask for some money from her boss, so that she can purchase some dresses but the boss declines. In the end, Ana has to ask for some money from the dad to bail Estela out. Here, these two ladies are powerless as a result of their economic situations and have to rely on someone else for help.
