Dream, Journey, Identity Hong Kong cinema is more than martial arts and action. The second part of the course examines dramas of love, fantasy, journey, search, and self-discovery in Hong Kong cinema. Characters in these films seem to harbor a big dream: a “Hong Kong dream,” a “California dream,” or a “New York dream.” With the passage of time, they attempt to create a new identity, be a different person, go to a new place, enter a relationship, or feel nostalgic for the past. Discuss the ways in which these characters change, pursue dreams, cherish old relationships, or search for new identities. Please feel free to consult relevant discussions in Planet Hong Kong by Professor David Bordwell, the anthology A Companion to Hong Kong Cinema, and the special section “China and China Diaspora Film” in the online journal Jump Cut. (See the syllabus for details.) In your analysis, you should discuss the films of at least three different directors. You may focus on one film from each of the three directors. You should analyze at least three films altogether. Please also briefly comment on the stylistic characteristics of each of the directors and films. Hong Kong cinemas are one of celebrated for their innovative and stylish presentation; most films from Hong Kong have educative themes such as theme of journeys, dreams, and identity amid the backdrop of the city's prolonged unrest. As Cheung et al. (2015) note, "Hong Kong films narrate our postmodern present and open a window to exilic nostalgia, urban (un)consciousness, everyday imaginations, collective memories, and cultural representations of the past that speak to audiences far beyond the territory's borders" (Cheung et al., p 1). In a city with a shining skyline and a busy street, Hong Kong films capture the worries of individuals who struggle with their dreams, for example, having a good life or family, while others struggle with self-discovery. The chase of a dream, whether professional, personal, or existential, emerges as a driving force. Movie directors portray characters who are in a dilemma, torn between fantasy and reality, modernity and tradition. Their metaphorical and literal journey becomes a means of self-exploration and transformation. Simultaneously, the question of identity is posed: Who are we? Who do we wish to become? One's personality is reflected by the environment one is in, Hong Kong City, in our case. The essay critically evaluates the poignant movies that probe into these interconnected themes. Peter Chan's “Comrades Almost a Love Story” explores two immigrants “Xiao-Jun and Li Qiao” evolving dreams and identities over decades. Stanley Kwan's Rouge hauntingly portrays a transcendent love that defies the boundaries of life and death. Wong Kar-Wai's film "In the Mood for love" shows the nostalgia and repressed desires simmering beneath the veneer of propriety. The directors of the film employ different styles to show the Hong Kong paradoxes of loss, love, and search for identity. Comrades Almost a Love Story Film Directed by Peter Chan (“Comrades Almost a Love Story (1996) - Legendado”) Comrade Almost a Love Film is a romantic movie that shows the lives of two immigrants, Li Xiao-Jun and Li Qiao. During the 1980s, the two main characters travel from mainland China to Hong Kong; they share many things, including the struggle of being an immigrant, which brings them together and sprouts a romance. However, societal pressure and individual goals pull them apart. Their different career aspiration kept on separating them, weakening their relationship and the connection they had. Pursuing Dreams, Navigating Relationships Different aspirations in life bring people together or separate; Peter Chan clearly shows this in the movie. Li Xiao-Jun and Li Qiao's initial Hong Kong common dream kept them together, giving them comfort in a new territory/land. However, later, their dreams diverged, and priorities now changed; Li Qiao sought wealth in a business venture and later married Ouyang Pao, while an idyllic family life attracted Li Xiao-Jun, and he ended up marrying her fiancée. Chun captures moments of emotional toll as career and differences in aspiration strain their bond. Though the two are not together, their relationship remains constant, and they still love each other, an anchor amidst turbulent identity shifts. They were changing due to their careers, but their feeling for each other never changed. This dichotomy of dreams pursued yet love preserved resonates powerfully. Peter Chan's Stylistic Flair Different director uses different styles in their film to attract viewers and produce the best movie. Chan's films employ various styles to blend gritty realism with tender romanticism seamlessly. In the beginning, viewers are immersed in a distressing immigrant experience through desaturated colors. In contrast, the couple's intimate moments bask in warm lighting and soulful music, elevating the ordinary to the poetic. Moreover, Chan uses daring narrative techniques, such as abrupt time jumps and imagined realities, mirroring memories and relationships' fragmented yet resilient nature. The uniqueness of Hong Kong film is highlighted by Cheung et al. (2015) where she says "Hong Kong cinema poses some particularly thorny questions for a field dominated by studies of Hollywood and European cinema" given its unique position between the West and China (Cheung et al., p 5).
