Final Film Analysis: The Big Short (2015)
Film Analysis Log
Your out of class assignment for the film unit will be to watch a film of your choice (except for films we watch as a class) and write a film analysis log. Feel free to watch the same movie as someone else in the class, and discuss the movie afterwards, but write your own response. Your response should follow the format below.
1. Title, release date, director, rating of the movie, (G, PG, PG-13, or R), and date viewed
2. Analysis: This is at least a 2-3 page essay (MLA format/double-spaced) in which you respond to the movie
In the first paragraph, briefly summarize the film (no more than 4 sentences) and clearly state a key message, theme, or big idea that the film conveys.
In your body paragraphs, use specific evidence from the film to explain how this message is conveyed through elements of preproduction, production, and postproduction. Make sure you answer the following 2 questions:
HOW do the filmmakers convey a certain message?
WHY did they make the choices that they made?
Use the vocabulary (i.e. the technical terms from the lectures) that we go over in class
Film Analysis Log #1 is due Thursday, May 24th 11:59 PM. For this first response, you must view one of the movies that have been nominated for an Academy Award in Cinematography and Editing preferably from the last 30 years but I’m okay if you go back further than 50 years; if you pick a movie that is not on the list, please let me know ahead of time.
