1. You are to analyze and describe how Hitchcock utilizes aspects of MES, Editing, Sound, Narrative to develop style and meaning in the film.
2. Discuss major themes in Psycho
Please give concrete examples from scenes regarding details of the use of MES, Editing, Sound. Address character development, aspects of character. Please do not forget what MES. is comprised of: lighting, camera ( angle, shot type, movement), subject movement, framing and composition, set design, costumes, acting/behavior etc.
3. Psycho and Some Like It Hot are both films made in 1959. How do these films push the boundaries of American culture at the time? Is film art a mirror or window into/on the culture?
Please do some basic reading on Sigmund Freud and how his theories of Psychoanalysis made a major impact on the discipline of Psychology/Psychiatry. How are his ideas embodied in Psycho?
4. Look at the " Shower Sequence" several times...at the end the camera work is really really beautiful. What happens when the style is beautiful but the content is shocking, but handled in an elegant way? How does that impact the meaning? Think about directorial choices...Hitchcock could have shot this a myriad of ways. This sequence took a week to shoot. A body double was used for Janet Lee, by the way.
5. It was very very risky and edgy to kill off Marian 1/3 into the film. The "object of desire" disappears. Why do you think Hitchcock did this? It was so unusual for that time. How does Marian develop as a character? This was the first time a woman was shown in undergarments in a film, it was a bit shocking.
6. What is the tone/feel of Psycho, how is that tone established?
( Think about how the first six or 7 minutes of Some Like It Hot are without dialogue, or very little dialogue. The story is told to you in pictures.)

Screen Psycho
Introduction
Psycho is a psychological horror movie that was produced in 1960. The film was written by Alfred Hitchcock and was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. This movie is regarded as one of the greatest movies of all times. The film redefined what can actually be called a horror flick, it brought the psychological monster into the mainstream cinema and also created a new type of thrill. Generally, the Psycho movie was very different from other films that were produced during this particular time because of the unique techniques that were employed by the director Hitchcock. Some Like It Hot is a black and white comedy movie that was produced in 1950 and was directed by Billy Wilder. In this paper, I will examine different techniques and approaches that were used in producing these movies thus making them outstanding among the films produced during this period of time.
In Psycho, the director and the editors employed effective editing and this played a major role in giving the film a meaning and making it stand out among the other works produced during this time. For a movie to be regarded as being good, then it should employ appealing editing to attract the attention of the audience. It is also important for the directors and the editor to ensure that their editing is as smooth as possible to attract the intended viewers. Hitchcock has demonstrated that editing is much more than joining different shots and that it required instinct, accuracy and most importantly using the shots precisely in terms of their relation to one another. For example, it is clear that the movie starts in the afternoon as were are transformed from the outside the window of an apartment into the apartment using smart editing techniques.
Additionally, through the use of proper editing skills, the director was able to effectively change the shots. For example, Hitchcock uses well edited close up of the main character Marion Crane, as she drives away from the hometown. The edited shots show her face, part of the steering while and the background which includes the sky. The shots change from the close up shot what may be referred to as an eye-matching shot where the audience see the highway in front of the character, here the audience can now understand the objective of the director when they notice that the sky turns darker and darker and finally it starts raining and Marion pull over to sleep.
Most importantly, sound also plays a significant role in establishing the importance of Psycho. Hitchcock has used different aspects of music which captures audience attention and makes then connect to what is happening in the film. Hitchcock has been able to keep the suspense in the slow portions of the film, for example, when the Marion steals the cash. When she, Marion, leaves town with the money in her passage seat, the fast-paced violin sounds create a swirl of nerves and the audience nearly feel her stomach churning. It is also important that this music style is employed every time Marion handles the stolen money, this reveals her fear and tentativeness she feels for her impulsive actions.
Psycho has several major themes that are worth considering. The theme of duality. This theme has been shown in two main ways, first, Hitchcock has employed the shadow of the characters and this can be shown from the bedroom scene where the Marion makes the decision of leaving her home and beginning her journey. Here we can see Marion’s shadow entering first before we can see ...
