Ricci is an unemployed man who finds himself deep in the culture of poverty, and represents the suffering working class in the depressed post war economy who considered items such as bicycle as a necessity. Ricci, and Bruno his son is subjected to a strenuous circumstance when their bicycle is stolen (De Sica). The father-son story is a representation of the challenges during social and economic conditions during the post-war Rome. Post-war disorder, and distress is evident in the movie with the piteous paradoxes of poverty hat reflects a poor working man who struggles to find his stolen vehicle the whole day (De Sica).
