Contemporary art has witnessed the growth of various artists who use different mediums and materials in doing their art. Whereas some use ceramics, others use wood in making paintings and sculptures that contain different messages for different audiences. Considering different artists shows how their approach to art differs, yet suits their target audiences.
Dan Miller
Dan Miller was in 1961 at Castro Valley in California, and grew into one of the most famous artists of his generation. He mainly did his work using ink, paper, paint, and pencil, mainly focusing on illustrating dense layers of letters and words and such objects as electrical sockets and light bulbs; he repeated such artworks into abstraction (Kitsuno & Kobayashi, 2019). The works he has done show that the layers on the works are superimposed on each other; they also amalgamate to form monochromatic fields made of patterned forms as well as bold strokes.
Miller’s canvasses are particularly impressive, and sometimes they were as high as 12ft in height. The height was important to Miller because it helped him in organizing, processing, and communicating his message to the world around him. His aim was to render the cacophony that was easy in daily and make it visible, and this explains why much of his work articulated the flow and relentless ebb of thoughts, emotions, and ideas which are common to people so that they can understand the message that he intended to pass through his works (Walsh, 2013). Over the recent years, Miller has also expanded the materials that he uses in making his art, and he now uses ceramics, textiles, and wood, among other materials. The use of such materials has also helped in making his works easier to understand and communicate to a larger audience. He uses materials which are common to people, and this is what has made his works outstanding.
Further, it is worth understanding that Miller has several solo exhibitions which are placed in different galleries at the international level, and this has also helped him to feature in such major art fairs like The Armory Show, Frieze New York, NADA Miami, and the 57th Venice Biennale. Such works have made him receive international recognition, and some of his works have been placed in permanent collections at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Berkeley Art Museum, and the American Folk Art Museum. In 2015, Miller was honored with the Wyn Newhouse award, which is a grant that is awarded annually to artists who have disabilities.
Monica Valentine
Monica Valentine was born in 1955 at San Mateo in California. She creates sculptures using such materials as beads, colored sequins, pins, and shaped foam. Her style is unique because she creates works that are visually tactile and rich. She also makes her works using such playful shapes as geometric cubes and spheres, skulls, logs, and cake shapes, and these sculptures help in showing the fascination that the artist has with color, although she is blind (Steinberg, 2016). In addition, this style has helped in making Valentine a unique artist due to the manner in which she mixes different colors and shapes to make sculptures that communicate to a broad audience. Mixing colors in such a way helps in attracting the attention of the intended audience, further explaining why Valentine is among the standout artists in the current world.
Valentine relates to different shapes and colors using some of her other senses like touch, describing her capacity to feel the heat that is generated by the color red, and the cool feeling of the green color. As mentioned earlier, she does this because she is blind yet she has to fulfill her fascination with colors and different shapes. She uses this synthetic relation to color, and thus easily and speedily pins the sequins and beads into the foam body which forms her sculptures (Flores & Kihleng, 2019). She intuitively groups together similar colors or positions contrasting colors depending on how they relate to each other. The expertise in which she does this despite her blindness has resulted in her works being considered and branded as an embodiment of her cheerfulness as well as her dry sense of humor. The use of contrasting colors and shapes on her sculptures has also positioned her among the greats in modern day art.
William Scott
William Scott was born in 1964 at San Francisco in California. He stands out as one of the most prominent self-taught artists whose work mainly focuses on painting the image of San Francisco as “Praise Frisco”. “Praise Frisco” is an imagined utopia which recognizes his idealization of the wholesome city as a community. In his works, William features such stuff like city landmarks which are transformed within the city, portraits of African-American celebrities, neighborhood sites, as well as community members who attend his church (Kathryn, 2017). The layers of his works also contain such phrases as “Another life”, “Reinvent the past”, and “Wholesome encounters” that are contained in his works.
